BSN Round 17 (Regular Season): Aguada defeat Mayaguez in the closest game of the week

The most exciting game of round 17 in the BSN took place in Aguada. This derby game ended with only one-point defeat on the road of second-ranked Indios (10-7) to fifth ranked Aguada (7-13) 98-97 on Tuesday evening. Aguada shot the lights out from three sinking 12 long-distance shots on high 57.1 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. American forward Cameron McGriff (201-1997, college: OK State) stepped up and scored 25 points for the winners and the former international point guard Alexander Abreu (179-1991, college: UWG) chipped in 18 points and 9 assists. American power forward Nick Perkins (203-1996, college: Buffalo) responded with 22 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Indios' coach tried various players' combinations and tested in total twelve players in this game, but that didn't help. Aguada maintains fifth place with 7-13 record. Mayaguez at the other side keeps the second position with seven games lost. Aguada are looking forward to face league's second-placed Guaynabo at home in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Mayaguez will play against San German and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Very important is a road loss of third ranked Piratas (8-11) against fifth ranked Cangrejeros (7-6) on Tuesday night. Visiting Piratas were crushed by Cangrejeros in Santurce 93-66. American center Jared Sullinger (206-1992, college: Ohio St.) nailed a double-double by scoring 18 points and 22 rebounds for the winning side and Walter Hodge accounted for 17 points and 6 assists. DR Congolese point guard Emmanuel Mudiay (196-1996) came up with 22 points and 5 rebounds for Quebradillas in the defeat. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Cangrejeros have a solid series of three victories in a row. Santurce moved-up to fourth place. Quebradillas at the other side keep the third position with 11 games lost. Santurce will play against league's leader Arecibo on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Quebradillas will play against the league's leader Caguas and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Very important is a road loss of third ranked Osos (8-9) against sixth ranked Vaqueros (7-11) on Wednesday night. Visiting Osos were defeated by Vaqueros in Bayamon 90-80. The best player for the winners was Stephen Thompson Jr who scored 24 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Chris Ortiz produced 20 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists for the guests. Bayamon moved-up to fourth place, which they share with San German. Loser Osos keeps the third position with nine games lost. Bayamon will meet higher ranked Manati (#3) on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Manati will have a break next round.

There were no shocking results in the rest of the games of round 17: Guaynabo won against Bayamon on the opponent's court 89-78. Arecibo managed to outperform Ponce in a home game 101-97. San German managed to beat Carolina on the road 97-93. Guaynabo was defeated by Caguas on its own court 108-112.




Bayamon - Guaynabo 78-89

Very expected game in Bayamon where 6th ranked Vaqueros (7-11) were defeated by second ranked Mets (10-6) 89-78 on Monday. Guaynabo made 25-of-30 free shots (83.3 percent) during the game. The best player for the winners was the former international Jaysean Paige (188-1994, college: WVU) who scored 27 points. American-Jordanian power forward Rondae Hollis-Jefferson (201-1995, college: Arizona) chipped in 14 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. International center Ismael Romero (205-1991) produced a double-double by scoring 24 points, 17 rebounds and 4 assists and American forward Kristian Doolittle (201-1997, college: Oklahoma, agency: Pensack Sports) added 13 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists respectively for the hosts. Four Bayamon players scored in double figures. Guaynabo maintains second place with 10-6 record having just three points less than leader Caguas. Loser Vaqueros dropped to the fourth position with 11 games lost. They share it with San German. Guaynabo will meet Aguada (#5) on the road in the next round. Bayamon will play against Manati and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Very predictable result in Arecibo where first ranked Capitanes (13-3) defeated 6th ranked Leones (5-9) 101-97 on Tuesday. However just four-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. Arecibo made 20-of-25 free shots (80.0 percent) during the game. The best player for the winners was the former international Alfonso Plummer (185-1997, college: Illinois) who scored 26 points and 4 assists. Nigerian-American center Jahlil Okafor (211-1995, college: Duke) chipped in 23 points and 6 rebounds (on 10-of-12 shooting from the field). Four Capitanes players scored in double figures. Capitanes' coach used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. The former international point guard Jezreel De Jesus (185-1991, agency: Interperformances) produced 28 points (was perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw line !!!) and American guard Bryon Allen (192-1992, college: GMU) added 22 points respectively for the guests. Capitanes have a solid series of three victories in a row. Arecibo maintains first place with 13-3 record. Loser Leones keeps the sixth position with nine games lost. There was a minor upset in Carolina where their close opponent Gigantes (7-10) were defeated by fourth ranked Atleticos (7-11) 97-93 on Tuesday. Strangely Carolina outrebounded San German 46-27 including a 19-5 advantage in offensive rebounds. San German shot the lights out from three sinking 18 long-distance shots on high 54.5 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 29 assists. The best player for the winners was the former international Jose Rodriguez (201-1992, college: Texas Southern) who scored 21 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. American point guard Nate Mason (188-1995, college: Minnesota) chipped in a double-double by scoring 13 points and 14 assists. Atleticos' coach Eddie Casiano used an eleven-player rotation in such tough game. International center George Conditt IV (208-2000, college: Iowa St.) produced a double-double by scoring 22 points and 17 rebounds and American forward Scottie James Jr (202-1996, college: Liberty, agency: Pensack Sports) added 21 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists respectively for the hosts. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. San German maintains fourth place with 7-11 record, which they share with Bayamon. Carolina lost third consecutive game. Defending champion dropped to the fifth position with ten games lost.
