BSN Round 22 (Regular Season): Quebradillas defeat Ponce in the closest game of the week

Fourth-ranked Leones (11-12) gave a tough game to first ranked Piratas (17-9) in Ponce on Thursday. The visitors from Quebradillas managed to secure only three-point victory 91-88. However their fans expected easier game. DR Congolese guard Emmanuel Mudiay (196-1996) had a double-double by scoring 24 points and 10 assists to lead the charge for the winners and American center Thomas Robinson (203-1991, college: Kansas) chipped in 14 points and 12 rebounds during the contest. At the losing side American forward Darius Bazley (206-2000) responded with 14 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Quebradillas maintains first position with 17-9 record. Ponce lost third consecutive game. They keep the fourth place with 12 games lost. Quebradillas are looking forward to face league's second-placed Santurce on the road in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Ponce will play against Aguada and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Very important is a road loss of second ranked Cangrejeros (15-9) against fifth ranked Atleticos (11-14) on Friday night. Visiting Cangrejeros were defeated by Atleticos in San German 92-79. Guard Andre Curbelo (183-2001, college: Southern Miss) notched 14 points to lead the effort and Jalen Slawson supported him with 14 points. Even 18 points by American swingman Ian Clark (190-1991, college: Belmont) did not help to save the game for Santurce. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. San German maintains fifth position with 11-14 record. Santurce at the other side keeps the second place with nine games lost. San German will play against higher ranked Carolina (#4) on the road in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Santurce will play against the league's leader Quebradillas and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
The game between Top Four teams took place in Caguas. Third ranked host Criollos (14-11) defeated their biggest opponent Cangrejeros (15-9) 104-100. Travis Trice II fired 36 points (!!!), 6 rebounds and 8 assists (made all of his eleven free throws !!!) for the winners. Angel Rodriguez produced a double-double by scoring 22 points and 10 assists for lost side. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Criollos have a solid three-game winning streak. Caguas maintains third position with 14-11 record having eight points less than leader Quebradillas. Loser Cangrejeros keeps the second place with nine games lost. Caguas will meet Manati (#6) on the road in the next round. Santurce will play against the league's leader Quebradillas (#1) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

There were no shocking results in the other games in round 22: Mayaguez won against Guaynabo on the opponent's court 94-84. Manati unfortunately lost to San German in a home game 88-102. Guaynabo managed to beat Carolina on the road 97-91. Caguas defeated Aguada on its own court 87-80. Arecibo was beaten by Quebradillas in a road game 100-92.

Guaynabo - Mayaguez 84-94

Rather expected game in Guaynabo where 5th ranked Mets (9-16) were defeated by second ranked Indios (15-11) 94-84 on Tuesday. Mayaguez looked well-organized offensively handing out 29 assists. New Zealand forward Samuel Waardenburg (208-1999, college: Miami, FL) fired a double-double by scoring 30 points and 10 rebounds (on 11-of-13 shooting from the field) for the winners. New Zealand center Tyrell Harrison (214-1999) chipped in 25 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists. Indios' coach Ivan Velez used an eleven-player rotation and allowed the starting five to rest. American center DeMarcus Cousins (211-1990, college: Kentucky) produced a double-double by scoring 21 points and 12 rebounds and his fellow American import swingman Theo Pinson Jr (198-1995, college: UNC) added 26 points respectively for lost side. Four Guaynabo players scored in double figures. Indios have a solid three-game winning streak. Mayaguez maintains second position with 15-11 record having six points less than leader Quebradillas. Guaynabo lost seventh consecutive game. They keep the fifth place with 16 games lost. Mayaguez will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. We cannot really consider it an upset in the game between close teams in Carolina where one of their biggest challengers Gigantes (11-11) were defeated by fifth ranked Mets (9-16) 97-91 on Thursday. Guaynabo made 23-of-28 free shots (82.1 percent) during the game. Guaynabo outrebounded Carolina 46-32 including 16 on the offensive glass. International center Ismael Romero (205-1991) fired a double-double by scoring 25 points and 17 rebounds for the winners. American swingman Theo Pinson Jr (198-1995, college: UNC) chipped in 18 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. American guard Kobi Simmons (196-1997, college: Arizona) produced 16 points and 6 assists and point guard Evander Ortiz (180-1997, college: PR-Bayamon) added 14 points and 6 assists respectively for lost side.
