BSN Round 7 (Regular Season): Criollos lose to Gigantes

Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

Round 7 most important game was a defeat of league's leader Criollos (6-3). They were edged by third ranked Gigantes (5-3) 103-101 on Saturday night. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Criollos. The hosts trailed by 10 points after three quarters before their 37-25 charge, which allowed them to win the game. Strangely Criollos outrebounded Gigantes 42-29 including 32 on the defensive glass. It was a great evening for American guard Jaylen Nowell (193-1999, college: Washington) who led his team to a victory scoring 38 points (!!!) and 5 rebounds. The former international point guard Tremont Waters (180-1998, college: LSU) helped adding 22 points and 7 assists. At the losing side American center Moses Brown (218-1999, college: UCLA) responded with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 14 rebounds. Criollos' coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Carolina have a solid series of four victories in a row. They maintain third place with 5-3 record having five points less than leader Arecibo. Caguas at the other side dropped to the second position with three games lost. They share it with Aguada. They were replaced at the leadership position by Arecibo. Caguas will play next round against strong Mayaguez trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Carolina will try to continue on its current victory against fifth ranked Guaynabo on the road.
The game had a very big importance for second-ranked Vaqueros as it allowed them to take a leadership position. Vaqueros defeated 5th ranked Osos in Bayamon 98-91. It was an exceptional evening for American Jaylin Galloway (198-2002) who led the winners and scored 25 points and 4 assists. Stephen Thompson Jr accounted for 13 points, 7 rebounds and 8 assists. American Tyler Cook (206-1997, college: Iowa) came up with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 13 rebounds for Manati in the defeat. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Vaqueros have a solid series of three victories in a row. As mentioned above they took over a top position. Manati at the other side keeps the fifth place with six games lost. They share the position with Guaynabo. Manati will play next round against strong Aguada trying to get back on the winning streak. Bayamon will try to continue on its current victory against fourth ranked Santurce on the road.
A very close game took place in Santurce between Mets and Cangrejeros. Sixth ranked Mets (4-6) got a very close victory on the road over 4th placed Cangrejeros (4-5). Mets managed to escape with a 3-point win 94-91 on Sunday evening. Ismael Romero fired a double-double by scoring 19 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. Angel Rodriguez produced a double-double by scoring 17 points and 10 assists for lost side. Cangrejeros' coach tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Guaynabo moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Manati. Santurce lost third consecutive game. They keep the fourth position with five games lost. They share it with Mayaguez. Guaynabo will meet at home higher ranked Carolina (#3) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Santurce will play against the league's leader Bayamon and hope to secure a win.

There were no shocking results in the rest of the games of round 7: San German lost to Mayaguez on the opponent's court 90-100. Ponce managed to outperform Santurce in a home game 111-106. Arecibo managed to beat Aguada on the road 95-90. Winless Quebradillas were defeated by Mayaguez on its own court 106-114. Ponce was beaten by San German in a road game 99-89.



Mayaguez - San German 100-90

There was a minor upset in Mayaguez where 3rd placed Atleticos (7-3) were defeated by fifth ranked Indios (4-5) 100-90 on Friday. Mayaguez made 23-of-29 free shots (79.3 percent) during the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 27 assists. New Zealand center Tyrell Harrison (214-1999) fired a double-double by scoring 33 points (!!!) and 16 rebounds for the winners. Australian guard Nathan Sobey (190-1990, college: Wyoming) chipped in a double-double by scoring 18 points and 11 assists. Five Indios players scored in double figures. American point guard Alex Hamilton (193-1993, college: La Tech, agency: SLN) produced 21 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists and guard Andre Curbelo (183-2001, college: Southern Miss) added 13 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists respectively for lost side. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Mayaguez moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Santurce. Loser Atleticos dropped to the second position with three games lost. Mayaguez will meet at home league's second-placed Caguas in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. San German will play against Quebradillas and hope to secure a win.

Ponce - Santurce 111-106

There was a small surprise in Ponce where fourth ranked Leones (4-8) defeated their close opponent Cangrejeros (4-5) 111-106 on Friday. Santurce trailed by 16 points at halftime and as many as 18 after three quarters before a 32-19 last quarter charge cut the deficit to 106-111 at the end of the game. Leones made 30-of-36 free shots (83.3 percent) during the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. American guard Terence Davis (193-1997, college: Ole Miss) fired 24 points, 5 rebounds, 8 assists and 4 steals for the winners. The former international power forward Jordan Murphy (200-1997, college: Minnesota) chipped in a double-double by scoring 21 points and 11 rebounds. Four Leones players scored in double figures. American guard Malik Beasley (196-1996, college: FSU) produced 31 points and the former international point guard Angel Rodriguez (180-1992, college: Miami, FL) added 16 points and 7 assists respectively for lost side. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Despite that victory Ponce went down to fifth position due to points difference. Santurce lost third consecutive game. They keep the fourth place with five games lost. They share the position with Mayaguez. Ponce will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. The game between closely ranked teams ended with their biggest opponent Santeros' (6-3) home loss to first ranked Capitanes (8-2) 90-95 on Saturday. Aguada was tied after three quarters but could not keep up in the last quarter eventually losing the game. Capitanes dominated down low during the game scoring 68 of its points in the paint compared to Santeros' 48. Capitanes looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. International forward RJ Melendez (201-2002, college: MSU) fired 20 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. Brazilian-American center Tim Soares (211-1997, college: Master's) chipped in 18 points and 7 rebounds. Dominican Rigoberto Mendoza (191-1992) produced a double-double by scoring 17 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists and the former international point guard Ivan Gandia-Rosa (185-1997, college: UNF) added 19 points and 5 assists respectively for lost side. Both teams had five players each who scored in double figures. Arecibo have an impressive series of five victories in a row. They maintain first place with 8-2 record. Loser Santeros keeps the second position with three games lost. They share it with Caguas. Arecibo will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game.
