WSBL announced its 2009 awards - Nov 26, 2009
It has been less than a week after the Montaneras de Morovis were crowned the 2009 Women Superior Basketball League Championship. An accomplishment that had fill the league with a renew sense of excitement. We had record crowds on every level. 'The regular season was outstanding with a 50 percent increase in attendance. That number almost doubled in the post season when we average around 65% more than last year', said Jose Rosas, the WSBL president.

The rise in popularity is just one aspect that makes the women game such an interesting sport to watch. 'The performance we had all year long is what it is fueling this surge in interest. From the very beginning, we had outstanding performances from our players', added the league leader.

We this in mind, heres a look at the 2009 WSBL postseason awards:

Most Valuable Player: Amy Denson (186-F-84, college: Arizona St.), Morovis. This is the 6-foot-1 power forward third (2007, 08 and 09) MVP in a row. In seventeen games, the former Arizona State star average 21.5 ppg. (good for sixth in the league), with 14.2 rppg. (Second) while shooting .491 from the field.

Rookie of the Year: Mercedes Colon, Guaynabo. The youngster served notice to the rest of the league with a solid, 8.67 ppg. campaign. More impressive than her scoring output is the fact that she logged over 350 minutes (359), fifth best on the team, for a contending team.

Comeback Player of the Year: Karen Colon (G-77), Mayaguez. After sitting out the 2008 campaign because a trade dispute, Colon went on to have a remarkable year. Her 9.81 ppg. and 15.13 rpg. were two of the biggest reasons the Indians made it to the semifinals.

Player of the Year: Toccara Ross (180-F-86, college: Iowa St.), Isabela and Juncos. If not for Densons championship drive, Ross may well have pulled a double-double in the award department. All she did in 2008 was led the league in scoring (29.4 ppg.) and rebounds (14.7) while playing most of the time for the hapless Pollitas.

Early in the week, the league announced its Coach, which went to the Giants Gerry Batista, and Owner of the Year (Carlos Moya of San Juan).

On the rumor mill sits several items of importance. First and at forefront of all discussions is the WSBLs attempt to expand next August. As reported early, several locations are being considered for possible franchise allocation. Chief among them is Bayamon, where a group with ties to the municipal administration is bidding hard. Also in the mix are Hatillo and Quebradillas, as well as Catao and Toa Baja. Its now seems likely that at least one and maybe two teams will be added by next spring. Which of them, aside the one from the City of El Chicharron, will win out is still in the air.

There are also conversations among the owners regarding the number of import per team. The current system allows up to three imports per franchise, depending on its order of finish the prior year. The new suggestion will reduce the number to one for the top eight clubs and two for the rest of the field

Morovis hoist the Crown with a series clinching win - Nov 19, 2009
The wait is finally over in Morovis as the Mountaineers made good a three year promise to give the town of Morovis its first professional championship in more than a decade. Inspire by a jam packed Jose Pepe Huyke coliseum, the Mountaineers took the opening tip-off and never looked back as they pasted an overwhelmed Carolina Giants 83 to 65, to win the best of seven series in five (4-1) games. The win gave Morovis its first ever women basketball trophy. Im so happy that there are no words to describe, said Mountaineers franchise owner, Pedro Marrero. We gave Morovis, my town, a title and thats all the matters, added a relieved Marrero. Amy Denson led the effort for the newly crowned Morovenas with 25 points. The former Sun Devil star also added 8 rebounds. Veteran PG Pamela Rosado chipped in with a double-double, 21 points and 11 boards. Alyssa Hollins help the cause with 14. Whitney Murrer was Carolinas top scorer with 16. Felicity Willis managed 14 and Holly Mahan a very quiet 11.
