The most crucial game of the last round was a loss of top-ranked Vaqueros (23-9) in Ponce on Saturday night. Visitors were defeated by fourth ranked Leones (15-16) 105-96. Ponce made 29-of-31 free shots (93.5 percent) during the game, while Bayamon only scored thirteen points from the stripe. 26 personal fouls committed by Bayamon helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Worth to mention a great performance of the former international power forward Jordan Murphy (200-1997, college: Minnesota) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 32 points and 11 rebounds and the former international guard Jezreel De Jesus (185-1991, agency: Interperformances) who added 32 points and 7 rebounds (made all of his fourteen free throws !!!) during the contest. At the losing side international guard Stephen Thompson Jr (194-1997, college: Oregon St.) responded with 31 points. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Ponce maintains fourth position with 15-16 record. Bayamon at the other side still keeps top place with nine games lost. Ponce are looking forward to face Carolina (#4) on the road in the next round. Bayamon will play against Arecibo and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Important game to mention about took place in Guaynabo. Fifth ranked Mets (11-20) saved a 2-point victory at home edging much higher ranked Piratas (19-13) 115-113 on Saturday evening. The winners were led by international center Ismael Romero (205-1991) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 28 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists and Theo Pinson Jr supported him with 25 points, 5 rebounds and 9 assists. Even 32 points and 9 rebounds by international forward Phillip Wheeler (204-2002) did not help to save the game for Quebradillas. Guaynabo maintains fifth position with 11-20 record. Quebradillas at the other side keep the second place with 13 games lost. Guaynabo will play against Manati (#6) on the road in the next round. Quebradillas will play against the league's leader Mayaguez (#1) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Very important is a road loss of second ranked Cangrejeros (21-11) against fourth ranked Gigantes (16-16) on Friday night. Visiting Cangrejeros were defeated by Gigantes in a tough game in Carolina 95-102. Kobi Simmons fired 35 points (!!!) and 7 assists for the winners. Isaiah Pineiro produced 22 points and 9 rebounds for lost side. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Defending champion maintains fourth position with 16-16 record. Loser Cangrejeros keeps the second place with 11 games lost. Carolina will meet at home Ponce (#4) in the next round. Santurce will have a break next round.
There were no shocking results in the other games in round 28: Mayaguez won against Aguada on the opponent's court 116-108. Arecibo managed to outperform San German in a home game 93-86. Caguas recorded a loss to Mayaguez on the road 99-87. Santurce crushed Carolina on its own court 118-72.
The most impressive stats of the last round was 21 points and 6 rebounds by Angel Matias of Santurce.
