Summary of the 14th South American U17 championship for Women. Venezuela triumphs
Ecuador recently hosted a major basketball event. The 14th
edition of the South American U17 championship for Women was held in
Cuenca. The competition comprised 6 Latin American squads that fought
for the right to participate in the 2008 U17 FIBA Americas Championship
for Women. The top three teams were about to advance after the fifth
rounds of action. The contenders were Argentina, Venezuela, Brazil,
Peru, Chile and hosting Ecuador.
Round 1 of the tournament saw the favorites grab their first wins.
Argentina easily defeated Chile 81:40 behind
Debora Gonzalez (-90) 23 points. Venezuela edged Ecuador 92:70. And
finally Brazil were victorious against Peru 96:46. Debora Da Costa
knocking down 23 points for the winners.
Round 2 enjoyed one of the main championships treats as old rivalry
between Brazil and Argentina took a new shape. Argentina however quite
easily took care of Brazil 68:54.
Debora Gonzalez chipped in 20 points to pace Argentina. Venezuela
drove to their second win as they dismantled Peru 96:43 behind 17 points
from Igsen Muria and Cleider Blanco.
The third round cleared out first two lucky ones who qualified for the
2008 championship. These were Venezuela and Argentina squads as they
remained unbeaten. Venezuela handed in a 72:65 loss to Brazil.
Roselis Silva (-91) sparked with 17 points for Venezuela. Argentina
meanwhile secured a 55:43 victory over Ecuador to ensure one of the top
spots.
Debora Gonzalez and Andre Boquete produced 11 points apiece.
In the battle of titans Venezuela narrowly edged Argentina 73:71 in
Round 4 of the championship. Cleider Blanco notched 34 points for
Venezuela.
Nayla Kraft (-90) replied with 19 points for Argentina. In another
two encounters Brazil cruised past Chile 92:36, while Ecuador bumped
Peru 77:54.
Venezuela celebrated the title in the Round 5 as they crashed Chile
84:48 to end the competition undefeated and on top of the standings.
Argentina finished second after they confidently overcame Peru 69:34 in
their last fixture. The last qualification spot was decided in Brazil
versus Ecuador encounter. Brazilian basketballers came out as winners in
a dramatic battle. They secured a tough 57:55 victory and occupied the
third spot.

Peru completes South American U17 championships
Peru just ended the 14th South American U17 championship
held in Cuenca, Ecuador. The aim to qualify to the 2008 Americas U17
championship however was not reached. Peru did not manage to celebrate a
win and finished at the bottom of the ladder.
In the opening game of the tournament Peru faced Brazil and suffered a
46:96 loss. Maria Bellatin led Peru with 24 points. In the second game
Peru were rallied over by Venezuela 43:96. Daniela Porras chipped in 14
points for Peru. In one of the closest encounters in the tournament Peru
were narrowly beaten by Chile 50:59 in Round 3.
Later Peru could not match Ecuador as they fell short 54:77. In the
final clash of the competition Peru were defeated by Argentina 34:69.
Venezuela, Argentina and Brazil qualified winning the top three spots.
Chile finishes South American U17 championship
Chilean U17 squad just completed the 2007 South American
U17 championship in Ecuador. Unfortunately they were unable to qualify
for the 2008 Americas U17 championships for women. Chile U17 squad ended
the tournament at the 5th place. They suffered 4 losses in 5 games. In
Game 1 Chile were outscored by Argentina 40:81. Fernanda Serrano nailed
12 points to lead Chilean team. In the second game Chile were beaten by
Ecuador 39:70. In Round 3 came the first win for Chile as they defeated
Peru 59:50. Vivian Perez secured 16 points in a win. However it was the
only success for Chile as they later surrendered to Brazil 36:92 and
Venezuela 48:84.
Brazil U17 team finishes third
The 14th South American championship for U17 teams has
just ended in Ecuador. Brazil U17 national team managed to qualify to
the 2008 U17 Americas Championship for Women. After a sour start for
Brazilians when they lost to Argentina the team needed to regroup and
claimed one of the two qualifying spots. However on Day 3 of the
tournament Brazil suffered another blow when they were rallied over by
Venezuela 65:72 behind 17 points from Roselis Silva. They now had to win
the remaining battles to have the chance to improve in the ladder.
Fortunately for all Brazilian fans the U17 team fulfilled the task. They
first crashed Chile 92:36 in Round 4. In the last round they faced a
must-win battle against the hosts. In a dramatic clash Brazil turned out
to be more successful overcoming Ecuador 57:55 to clinch the third spot
in the ladder.
Venezuela wins the South American U17 Championship for Women
Venezuela defeated Argentina 73-71 to win the South
American U17 Championship for Women played in Cuenca, Ecuador.
The Argentineans had a 59-44 lead after three quarters, but a great
defensive effort by Venezuela gave them the win.
Cleider Blanco led Venezuela with 34 points while Argentina had Nayla
Kraft with 19 and Andrea Boquete 17.
Tonight on the final day of the competition, Brazil and Ecuador will
play for the last qualifying spot in the U18 FIBA Americas Championship.
In other games Brazil dominated Chile 92-36 and Ecuador defeated Peru
77-54.
