Argentina celebrated back-to-back victories at the beginning of the U17 South American Championship. The tournament is being held at the city of Peunte Alto in Chile. Seven teams are participating as they fight for three available spots at the U18 FIBA Americas Championship in 2010. Argentina got to a confident start winning two starting games.
They opened the competition against Paraguay and celebrated a 62:55 win at the end. Paraguay dominated in the first half and posted a 12-point lead at halftime. However Argentina turned the tables in the second half. They outgunned their opponents 21:12 in the third frame to narrow the deficit. Argentina limited Paraguay to just 6 points in the fourth quarter and ran away to the win at the end. Diana Cabrera (92) had 18 points and 13 boards for Argentina. Melisa Gretter (92) finished with 16 points and 9 boards in the win. Astrid Huttemann had game-high 22 points for Paraguay.
Argentina took on Ecuador in the second round of action. Once again they got to a slow start facing an 11-point deficit heading into the second period. But Argentina quickly erased the distance and entered the fourth term up by 5 points. They finished off Ecuador in the fourth stanza 23:6 to stay undefeated in Chile. Florencia Llorente delivered 18 points for Argentina. Diana Cabrera had 17 points and 24 boards in the win. Yoselyn Escalante answered with 16 points for Ecuador.
