Barquisimeto, Venezuela - In the first gameday of the 2006 South American Clubs Championship, it was a storm and rainy day in the city, as it was also for the host team, Guerreros de Lara (Venezuela), who surprisingly lost to Universidad Catolica (Chile), 77-72, in a historical day for the visitors at Domo Boliviariano of Barquisimeto, Venezuela.

Meanwhile, Boca Juniors (Argentina) came back from a bad start to comfortably defeat Deportivo San Jose (Paraguay), 78-62, and Universo BRB (Brasil) prooved their intentions of being champions by sweeping the current champions of Argentina, Gimnasia y Esgrima Comodoro Rivadavia, in a thrilling 90-81.
