Cocodrilos de Caracas claimed the LPB title! They defeated Marinos de Anzoategui on the road in the decisive seventh game of the championship series. Cocodrilos got to a confident start. Andre Emmett (196-G/F-82, college: Texas Tech) nailed 11 points in the opening to give the visitors a 19:15 lead. Marinos turned things around in the second frame. The hosts picked up the tempo to establish a 39:34 halftime lead. Cocodrilos stuck around in the third term. They cut the deficit to a single point 48:49 with ten minutes remaining. Cocodrilos pulled ahead late in the game and protected the lead well in the dying seconds. They snatched the victory at the end and dethroned Marinos. Andre Emmett finished with 26 points and was trumped the MVP of the Finals. Carl Elliott (193-G-83, agency: SportsTalent, college: G.Washington) added 16 points, while Windi Graterol (204-C-86) had 11 points and 12 boards for the visitors. Marinos answered with 15 points from Gregory Vargas (180-PG-86). Leon Rodgers (201-F-80, college: N.Illinois) chipped in 14 points in the loss.
Venezuelans defeat Foreigners 150-145 in LPB 2013 All-Star Game - May 3, 2013
Barquisimeto, Venezuela.- The Venezuelan Stars defeated Foreigners Stars 150-145 at Jose Beracasa Arena of Naciones Unidas Park in Caracas, in the 36th edition of Liga Profesional de Baloncesto's All-Star Game.
It was the 13th ever victory for the Venezuelans, while the Foreigners have won 21 games. In only two of the 36 editions, the organization has used a different format, based on geographic location of the teams.
Prior to the game, a few skills competitions took place. Micah Downs (203-G/F-86) of Bucaneros de La Guaira defeated Kelvin Caraballo (195-F-88) of Cocodrilos de Caracas in the Dunks Contest, while Robert Hornsby (201-F-82), also of Bucaneros de La Guaira, finished at first place in the Three-Points contest.
Several special guests made appearances, including Dominican former baseball player Sammy Sosa, Venezuela's Soccer U17 National squad coach Rafael Dudamel and former players of Venezuela's Senior NT. Carmelo Cortez, president of the Venezuelan Basketball Federation, was also there.
The Foreigners ruled in the first three quarters, 36-29, 44-36 (80-65) and 42-46 (122-111), but the Venezuelans completed a huge comeback in the fourth quarter, thanks to their three-point shooting, to get the win with 39 points in just 10 minutes, allowing only 23.
Robert Hornsby played in the game even though he was supposed to participate in the three-points contest only but his points were awarded to teammates. The Foreigners team was coached by Argentinian Guillermo Narvarte of Bucaneros.
LPB 2013 News - All-Star Game (Venezuelans vs Foreigners) to be played in Caracas - May 1, 2013
Barquisimeto, Venezuela.- Liga Profesional de Baloncesto will celebrate its 36th edition of the LPB All-Star Game between Venezuelans and Foreigners on May 1st at Naciones Unidas Park, in Caracas.
In 2012, the game was won by the Foreigners, 137-131, thanks to a great performance by Darius Adams, then player of Guaiqueries de Margarita who was selected as Most Valuable Player.
The fans were enabled to vote for both teams's starting lineups. Leon Rodgers was the foreign player with the most votes (2.661) while Oscar Torres (198-F/G-76) got 2.458 to the most voted Venezuelan player. Both players belong to title holders and current leaders Marinos de Anzoategui
Torres will be joined in the starting five ory Vargas and Axiers Sucre of Marinos de Anzoategui, Dwight Lewis of Trotamundos de Carabobo, and Richard Lugo of Guaiqueries de Margarita. They'll be coached by Jorge Arrieta (Marinos de Anzoategui).
The Venezuelans team bench will be completed by Heissler Guillent of Guaros de Lara, Carlos Cedeno of Bucaneros de La Guaira, Jesus Centeno of Cocodrilos de Caracas, Derwin Ramirez of Gigantes de Gjayana, Juan Herrera of Panteras de Miranda, Jesus Urbina of Toros de Aragua and Tulio Cobos of Guaiqueries de Margarita.
Meanwhile, the Foreigners squad will be coached by Argentinian Guillermo Narvarte of Bucaneros de La Guaira. Along with Leon Rodgers (Marinos), the other starting players will be Carl Elliott and Ryan Forehan-Kelly of Cocodrilos de Caracas, Edward Santana of Gaiteros del Zulia and Jack Martinez of Guaros de Lara.
Players in the bench will be Kelvin Pena of Toros de Aragua, Micah Downs and Mykal Riley of Bucaneros de La Guaira, Blake Walker of Gigantes de Guayana, Chris Massie of Panteras de Miranda and Kris Lang of Cocodrilos de Caracas and Courtney Fortson of Trotamundos de Carabobo. Fortson came in as a replacement for injured Filiberto Rivera of Gaiteros del Zulia while Fortson is replacing another injured player, teammate Trey Gilder.
The Three-Point Shots contest will involve Robert Hornsby of Bucaneros de La Guaira and Ryan Forehan-Kelly of Cocodrilos de Caracas for the Foreigners and Heissler Guillent of Guaros de Lara, Oscar Torres of Marinos de Anzoategui and Carlos Cedeno of Bucaneros de La Guaira for the Venezuelans.
The Dunks contest will include Mikal Riley and Micah Downs of Bucaneros de La Guaira, Courtney Fortson of Trotamundos de Carabobo for the Foreigners, Darwin Matos and Kelvin Caraballo of Cocodrilos de Caracas and Dwight Lewis of Trotamundos de Carabobo for the Venezuelans.
The game will be broadcasted in High Definition TV by DirecTV and will also be broadcasted by Meridiano TV.
Former Dominican baseball player Sammy Sosa and the new Ministry of Sports, Alejandra Benitez, as well as Venezuela's U17 Soccer Team coach, Rafael Dudamel, will be among the celebrities invited to the game by the LPB's event coordinators.
