We bring you last week's top performances from Venezuelans who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.
#1. This week's number one is an international swingman
Jhornan Zamora (196-89, currently plays in France). He could not help
ALM Evreux (10-8) in their last game. Despite Zamora's very good performance ALM Evreux lost
79-92 on the road to the higher-ranked (#6) Paris.
He was the second best scorer with 27 points. Zamora also added 3 assists in 33 minutes on the court.
Zamora has relatively good stats this year: 13.4ppg, 4.4rpg, 4.5apg, 1.1spg, 2FGP: 46.4%, 3FGP: 36.9% and FT: 78.8% in 17 games he played so far.
He has a dual citizenship: Spanish and Venezuelan.
Ex-Broncos de Caracas player is currently a member of the Venezuelan senior national team.
#2. Second place goes to former international center
Gregory Echenique (206-90, agency:
Pensack Sports, college:
Creighton, currently plays in Japan). Echenique was not able to help
Dragonflies (8-40) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his very good performance the tenth-placed Dragonflies (8-40) were defeated
82-67 in Shimane by the higher-ranked Magic (#5) in the West group.
Echenique recorded a double-double by scoring 22 points and getting 14 rebounds.
Echenique has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 17.0ppg, 9.7rpg, 2.0apg, 2FGP: 61.2%(300-490) and FT: 75.1%.
Echenique played for the Venezuelan national team in 2019.
#3. The Venezuelan player who performed third best last week abroad was an international forward
Michael Carrera (196-93, agency:
Interperformances, college:
S.Carolina, currently plays in Spain). He was not able to secure a victory for
Basquet (17-8) in their last game. Despite Carrera's very good performance Basquet (#4) was badly defeated
88-70 on the opponent's court by the leading Caceres_Basket in the Places 11-19 group.
He had a double-double by scoring 23 points and getting 14 rebounds. Carrera also added 2 blocks in 37 minutes.
There are only three games left until the end of the Second Stage. So now every game will be critical.
It's Carrera's first season with the team.
He has very impressive stats this year: 17.4ppg, 7.5rpg, 1.2apg, 2FGP: 56.8%(54-95), 3FGP: 28.6% and FT: 74.6% in 11 games.
Ex-Trotamundos de Carabobo player is also a member of the Venezuelan senior national team.
#4. Forward
Miguel Ruiz (197-90, currently plays in Argentina) managed to help Gimnasia y Esgrima Comodoro Rivadavia to win against the league outsider H.Americano
81-69 in the Argentinian La Liga in Thursday night's game.
Ruiz recorded only 4 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.
Gimnasia y Esgrima Comodoro Rivadavia (23-13) is placed seventh in the La Liga.
It was Gimnasia's fourth consecutive victory in a row.
Ruiz's overall stats this season are: 7.1ppg, 7.9rpg, 1.5apg and 1.4spg.
He is also Venezuelan national team player.
#5. An experienced international point guard
David Cubillan (181-87, agency:
Duran International, college:
Marquette, currently plays in Spain) couldn't help
Huesca (7-6) in their last game. Despite Cubillan's very good performance Huesca (#5) lost
75-82 on the opponent's court to the lower-ranked (#5) Burgos in the Places 11-19 group.
He was the top scorer with 19 points. Cubillan also added 3 steals in 25 minutes.
They ended the series of three consecutive victories.
There are only three games left until the end of the Second Stage. So now every game is very crucial.
This year Cubillan has relatively solid stats: 12.5ppg, 2.5rpg and 1.9apg in 19 games.
He plays currently for the Venezuelan national team.
#6. Power forward
Luis Valera (202-88, college:
UTRGV, currently plays in Spain) led
Guadalajara to a victory over the ninth-ranked Lanzarote (3-14)
69-65 in the Spanish EBA (fourth division) on Saturday night.
Valera was MVP of the game. He scored 17 points and grabbed 4 rebounds.
Lujisa Guadalajara Basket (7-8) is placed fifth in Group B-B.
This season Valera has very high stats. He averages: 17.0ppg and 6.5rpg.
Valera is a former international player as he played for the Venezuelan senior team six years ago.
One more player who has never been selected to any of national teams, but has Venezuelan passport: #1. Rafael Melgarejo (184-G-91, currently plays in Spain) could not help
Sant Cugat (2-9) in their last game. Despite his good performance Sant Cugat (#7) was crushed
72-50 on the road by the higher-ranked (#4) SESE in the Group C2.
Melgarejo was the top scorer with 11 points in 30 minutes.
The Regular Season already ended.
Melgarejo has reliable stats this year: 10.7ppg, 3.4rpg and 1.4apg in seven games he played so far.
