SLB Round 11: #1 Spartans are defeated by Gladiadores- April 26, 2021
There was no lack of interesting games this round. The round ended with defeat of the leader, derby games, favorites losing the games and games ending by tiny margin. Here is the last round review presented by ESL.
Gigantes - Supersonicos 91-85 The game between Top Four teams took place in Puerto Ordaz. Third ranked host Gigantes (6-4) defeated 4th placed Supersonicos (5-5) 91-85. Gigantes forced 19 Supersonicos turnovers. Strangely Supersonicos outrebounded Gigantes 42-27 including 18 on the offensive glass. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 30 assists. Swingman Luis Duarte (190-94) orchestrated the victory by scoring 31 points and 5 rebounds. The former international forward Axiers Sucre (199-78) contributed with a double-double by scoring 12 points and 10 rebounds for the winners. Four Gigantes players scored in double figures. Gigantes' coach Carlos Gil allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Colombian power forward Luis Almanza (196-91) answered with 21 points and 6 rebounds and guard Wilkerman Gomez (190-1) added 20 points and 5 rebounds in the effort for Supersonicos. Gigantes maintains third place with 6-4 record having four points less than leader Spartans. Supersonicos at the other side dropped to the fifth position with five games lost. Gigantes' next round opponent will be Indios (#4) in Caracas. Supersonicos will play at home against the league's leader Guaiqueries and hope to win that game. Cangrejeros had a 33-19 advantage in offensive rebounds. It was a great evening for Salvador Torres (194-96) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 11 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field). Guard Asa Acosta (180-98) helped adding 11 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Forward Jesus Rodriguez (200-93) responded with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 12 rebounds and the former international guard Michael Flores (192-85) scored 2 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Cangrejeros left bottom position moving up to eighth place. Loser Taurinos keep the seventh position with seven games lost. Hosts were defeated by fifth ranked Gladiadores (5-5) 72-68. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Spartans. It was a great evening for the former international point guard Carlos Cedeno (193-85, college: Frank Phillips) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 18 points and 10 assists. Point guard Humberto Bompart (183-94) helped adding 15 points and 8 rebounds. International point guard Jose Sojo (180-96) responded with 13 points and 5 assists and the former international center Javinger Vargas (202-90) scored 10 points and 7 rebounds. Spartans' coach Pablo Favarel rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Gladiadores maintains fifth place with 5-5 record, which they share with Supersonicos. Defending champion Spartans still keep top position with two games lost. They share it with Cocodrilos and Broncos. Broncos (8-2) won against visiting Diablos (7-3) 90-85. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Diablos. It was a key game for the top position in the league. Broncos looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. The best player for the winners was international point guard Garly Sojo (196-99) who had a double-double by scoring 20 points and 12 rebounds. Forward Jaime Finol (195-87) chipped in a double-double by scoring 15 points and 10 rebounds. Broncos' coach Manuel Berroteran used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. The former international forward Tulio Cobos (197-86, college: Northeastern St.) produced a double-double by scoring 20 points, 15 rebounds and 5 assists and swingman Morris Sierralta (190-87) added 29 points (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field) respectively for the guests. Five Broncos and four Diablos players scored in double figures. Broncos have an impressive series of six victories in a row. They keep a position of league leader, which they share with Cocodrilos and Spartans. Loser Diablos dropped to the second place with three games lost. They share the position with Trotamundos. Broncos will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Swingman Jesus Medina (188-94) helped adding 10 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. International swingman Raymond Rada (194-97) responded with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 10 rebounds and swingman Melvin Zambrano (193-95) scored 15 points and 8 rebounds. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Bucaneros moved-up to sixth place, which they share with Llaneros. Brillantes lost their fifth game in a row. Forward Jovanni Diaz (203-90) helped adding 10 points and 9 rebounds. Swingman Kevin Nino (195-91) responded with 19 points and 4 assists and the former international swingman Rafael Perez (193-82) scored 15 points. Heroes' coach Mario Andriolo tested twelve players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Cocodrilos keep a position of league leader, which they share with Broncos and Spartans. Luis Germany (195-95) came up with 3 points and 12 rebounds and Yoeser Valera (186-96) added 11 points respectively for Centauros in the defeat. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Indios have a solid series of three victories in a row. They moved-up to fourth place. Centauros at the other side keep the sixth position with five games lost. Indios will play against higher ranked Gigantes (#3) in Puerto Ordaz in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. It was a great evening for international point guard Heissler Guillent (186-86) who led his team to a victory scoring 21 points and 4 assists. International Edgar Martinez (199-97) helped adding 12 points and 7 rebounds. Swingman Elvis Baez (191-89) responded with 27 points (was perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line !!!) and power forward Carlos Milano (198-85) produced a double-double by scoring 13 points, 12 rebounds, 5 assists and 8 steals. Trotamundos' coach Alfredo Madrid tested ten players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. The victory was the tenth consecutive win for Guaiqueries. They maintain first place with 10-0 record. Loser Trotamundos keep the second position with three games lost. Guaiqueries will face Supersonicos (#5) in Margarita in the next round.
