Panteras de Miranda, a long-time franchise that existed between 1986 and 2019 in the former Liga Profesional de Baloncesto (LPB), will come back to Venezuelan professional basketball activities as a franchise in the upcoming edition of Superliga Profesional de Baloncesto (SPB), se to begin on March 18th.
The owners of Supersonicos de Miranda, a young franchise that was born in the former Superliga de Baloncesto (SLB) and was now a part of SPB, has decided to put aside that project and acquire the Panteras franchise to bring it back, understanding that most fans are more identified with this franchise and its colors. The team was formerly owned by ex MLB star Bobby Abreu.
The last time Panteras played was back in the 2019 LPB Cup, finishing at second place of the Eastern Conference and making it into the Final Four as hosts, before losing against Guaros de Lara in the Semifinals and finishing at fourth place overall, following another defeat against Guaiqueries de Margarita.
"It's a great honor and a huge compromise for me to lead this prestigious organization" said Francisco Ugueto, former president of Supersonicos and now at the top seat in Panteras. "Even though it hurts to leave behind the project we started under the name Supersonicos, being involved since the birth of the franchise until we made it a competitive one, we understand that the fans feel more close to Panteras and we decided to take this important step".
Supersonicos made it to the playoffs last season with a 9-9 record in the regular season. The team includes experienced Venezuelan players such as Tulio Cobos (197-F-1986, college: Northeastern St.) and Jhoyfer Diaz (200-C/F-1987) and is already studying both the national and foreign market to come back with a competitive roster.
