SPB Round 12 (Regular Season): Derby game ends with Spartans' defeat of Brillantes

The most interesting game was a derby match between two local teams from Caracas: Spartans (#6) and Brillantes (#8). Brillantes were defeated at home 79-84 and even the fact of playing on their own court did not help. Spartans forced 20 Brillantes turnovers. Strangely Brillantes outrebounded Spartans 41-26 including a 27-16 advantage in defensive rebounds. Spartans looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. It was a good game for Dominican guard Juan Suero (196-1993) who led his team to a victory with 25 points and 4 assists. Dominican point guard Richard Bautista (185-1997) contributed with 10 points and 10 assists for the winners. American forward Von Cameron Davis (196-2001, college: Kent St., agency: JCK Sports Group) replied with 20 points and 9 rebounds for Brillantes. Brillantes' coach Gustavo Garcia tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Spartans (5-3) moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Pioneros. Brillantes at the other side keep the eighth position with three games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.
An interesting game for Gaiteros (7-0) which hosted in Maracaibo 3rd ranked Cocodrilos (5-2). Top-ranked Gaiteros managed to get a 11-point victory 91-80. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Cocodrilos. Worth to mention a great performance of swingman Luis Duarte (190-1994) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 12 points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists and 7 steals and Nahziah Carter who added 21 points and 5 rebounds during the contest. The best for the losing side was Dominican Luis Montero (203-1993, college: South Plains) with 9 points and 14 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Undefeated Gaiteros have an impressive seven-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains first position with 7-0 record. Cocodrilos at the other side dropped to the fourth place with two games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.
The game between 10th ranked Centauros (1-6) and fourth ranked Marinos (6-2) in Margarita on Tuesday ended with biggest points difference. Guests from Caracas outscored Centauros 80-60. The winners were led by Alphonso Anderson who scored that evening 16 points and 5 rebounds. Even 20 points by DaQuan Brooks did not help to save the game for Centauros. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Marinos moved-up to second place. Loser Centauros dropped to the eleventh position with six games lost. They share it with Heroes. Marinos will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Centauros will play against Diablos (#9) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.




Gaiteros - Cocodrilos 91-80

An interesting game for Gaiteros (7-0) which hosted in Maracaibo 3rd ranked Cocodrilos (5-2). Top-ranked Gaiteros managed to get a 11-point victory 91-80. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Cocodrilos. Gaiteros forced 19 Cocodrilos turnovers. They brought some defensive toughness making 7 blocks. Worth to mention a great performance of swingman Luis Duarte (190-1994) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 12 points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists and 7 steals and American guard Nahziah Carter (198-1999, college: Washington) who added 21 points and 5 rebounds during the contest. Four Gaiteros players scored in double figures.
