There was a small surprise when ninth rankedVasco da Gama (8-5) edged on the road 6th ranked Sao Paulo (7-5) 87-84 on Friday. American point guard Jamaal Smith (184-1985, college: N.Mexico) fired 18 points and 6 assists for the winners. Rafael Paulichi (202-1998) chipped in a double-double by scoring 10 points and 11 rebounds. The former international point guard Ricardo Fischer (185-1991) produced 20 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists and American guard Cordero Bennett (184-1988) added 16 points and 6 assists respectively for lost side. Five Vasco da Gama and four Sao Paulo players scored in double figures. Sao Paulo's coach Jorge Guerra rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Vasco da Gama have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to sixth place. Loser Sao Paulo dropped to the seventh position with five games lost. They share it with Pinheiros.
