Regular Season Round 5: Las Animas - Puerto Varas 65-110

Date: November 8, 2024
The most interesting game of round 5 in the CUP was a home defeat of 5th ranked Las Animas (2-5) by third ranked Puerto Varas (3-4) who outscored them by 45 points 110-65 in the game for the fourth place. Puerto Varas dominated down low during the game scoring 64 of its points in the paint compared to Las Animas' 42. They outrebounded Las Animas 40-24 including a 31-14 advantage in defensive rebounds. It was a great shooting night for Puerto Varas especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 55.0 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. American forward Andrew Corum (201-1997, college: Virginia St.) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 23 points and 12 rebounds (on 10-of-12 shooting from the field) for the winners and the former international guard Marcelo Perez (196-1999, college: Southern Miss) chipped in 26 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Gabriel Diaz (-1999) responded with 13 points and 7 assists and American power forward Rashad Hassan (203-1989, college: SSU) scored 16 points and 5 rebounds. Four Las Animas players scored in double figures. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Despite that victory Puerto Varas went down to fourth position due to points difference. Las Animas at the other side keep the fifth place with five games lost. Puerto Varas are looking forward to face league's leader Univ.Concepcion at home in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Las Animas will play against Espanol (#3) in Osorno and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
