Barquisimeto, Venezuela.- The 2012 edition of the South American Championship by ABASU has been moved from its original June 15th-June 22nd schedule to June 7th-June 12th, according to an official press released published in Abasu's official website. The tournament will be played in San Salvador de Jujuy, Argentina.
The Senior National Team of Venezuela is scheduled to play in the tournament and fight for its second ever Gold medal, while also handling the responsability of playing as hosts in the FIBA World Olympic Qualy Tournament, to be played at Poliedro de Caracas between July 2nd and July 8th and in which 12 countries will fight for the last 3 spots to the London 2012 Olympic Games.
In the South American tournament, Venezuela will clash against B teams from Argentina and Brazil, since they're both qualified to play in London. That makes Uruguay the strongest opponent, while countries such as Colombia, Paraguay and Chile have showed signs of growth and evolution.
If the Venezuelan Basketball Federation opts to use the same squad for both tournaments and look at the South American Championship as proper preparation for the Olympic Qualy, Venezuela would have a clear shot at Gold, even if they decided to test some of the young talents currently playing in the United States and Spain.
The FVB is currently in negotiations with American head coach Eric Musselman and claims to be close to an agreement for him to continue in charge of the team that finished fifth in the FIBA Americas Pre Olympic Qualy Tournament held in Mar del Plata, Argentina, last September.
Young players with international experience such as Rafael Perez (193-G/F-82), Luis Bethelmy (200-F/C-86), Miguel Marriaga (208-C-84) and Francisco Centeno (201-G/F-85) would be worth another look, after missing their chance last year, while younger players such as Jhornan Zamora (193-G/F-89), of Spain's Blancos de Rueda Valladolid or high school players Michael Carrera (198-F-93) and Anthony Perez (203-F-93) would be checked out.
Venezuela is also preparing to host the FIBA World Olympic Qualy Tournament's Draw on January 31st in Caracas. Teresa Carreno Teathre has been selected as the home of that event.
