La Liga Argentina Round 21: Dep Viedma is defeated by Lanus

The teams have now bigger motivation at this stage of Regular Season. Every game can be crucial and decide about teams' position at the end of Regular Season. There was no lack of interesting games this round. The round ended with defeat of the leader and favorites losing the games. Here is the last round review presented by ESL.

The most surprising game was a loss of top-ranked Dep Viedma (9-3) in Buenos Aires on Thursday night. Visitors were defeated by eighth ranked Lanus (6-6) 88-79. It ended at the same time the five-game winning streak of Dep Viedma. American forward Leon Gilmore III (201-95, college: SF Austin) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 29 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals for the winners and point guard Lucas Perez (184-87) chipped in 13 points and 7 assists. The best for the losing side was point guard Fermin Thygesen (186-98) with 21 points and 5 assists. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Newly promoted Lanus maintains eighth place with 6-6 record. Dep Viedma at the other side still keeps top position with three games lost. Lanus are looking forward to face higher ranked Villa Mitre (#4) in Bahia Blanca in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Dep Viedma will play at home against GELP and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Important game to mention about took place in Cordoba. Sixth ranked Barrio Parque (9-6) saved a 1-point victory at home edging 3rd placed Echague (11-6) 69-68 on Thursday evening. It ended at the same time the ten-game winning streak of Echague. Point guard Luciano Guerra (184-97) nailed 16 points and 7 rebounds for the winning side and Bernardo Ossela accounted for 14 points and 8 rebounds. Guard Lisandro Ruiz Moreno (185-89) came up with 9 points and 6 assists for Echague in the defeat. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Barrio Parque maintains sixth place with 9-6 record. Echague at the other side keeps the third position with six games lost. Barrio Parque will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Echague will play on the road against Dep Norte in Armstrong and hopes to get back on the winning track.
The game in Salta was also quite interesting. Second ranked Villa S.Martin (12-4) played at the court of 5th ranked Salta Basket (9-5). Villa S.Martin defeated Salta Basket 91-76 on Thursday. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Salta Basket. The best player for the winners was Favio Vieta who scored 20 points and 8 rebounds. At the other side the best for losing team was Federico Pedano who recorded 19 points (went 10 for 10 at the free throw line !!!). Salta Basket's coach Jose Luis Pisani rotated ten players and allowed the starting five to rest. Villa S.Martin have a solid series of three victories in a row. They keep a position of league leader, which they share with Union SF. Loser Salta Basket dropped to the second place with five games lost. They share the position with Estudiantes C. and Estudiantes T.. Villa S.Martin will meet at home Estudiantes T. (#4) in the next round. Salta Basket will play against Olimpico in Ceres and hope to secure a win.
An interesting game took place in where 4th placed Estudiantes T. (9-5) was upset on its own court by fifteenth ranked Riachuelo LR (3-13) 76-66. Estudiantes T. at the other side, also newcomer in the league, dropped to the second position with five games lost. Riachuelo LR's next round opponent will be Independiente (#15) in Santiago del Estero. Estudiantes T. will play on the road against the league's second-placed Villa S.Martin (#2) where they are definitely not considered as a favorite in this game either.

San Isidro's coach Sebastian Torre used a ten-player rotation and allowed the starting five to get some rest. San Isidro moved-up to eleventh place, which they share with CAO Ceres. Loser Sp.America keeps the eighth position with eight games lost. San Isidro will face league's leader Union SF in Santa Fe in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory.

There were no shocking results in the rest of the games of round 21: Del Progreso won against Rivadavia on the opponent's court 81-71. GELP outscored Atenas in a home game 82-62. Rocamora was rolled over Estudiantes C. on the road 84-62.

Estudiantes T. - Riachuelo LR 66-76

An interesting game took place in where 4th placed Estudiantes T. (9-5) was upset on its own court by fifteenth ranked Riachuelo LR (3-13) 76-66. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Estudiantes T.. Riachuelo LR had a 32-20 advantage in offensive rebounds. Progreso's coach Juan Marcos Kass used a ten-player rotation and allowed the starting five to get some rest. The best for the losing side was Valentin Costa (182-99, agency: BIG) with 15 points and 5 assists and point guard Stefano Arancibia (176-97) scored 12 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists. Five Progreso and four Rivadavia players scored in double figures. Progreso moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Quilmes MP. Rivadavia lost third consecutive game.
