Defenders edged Tiger Sharks in Belize City 85-83. Defenders forced 19 Tiger Sharks turnovers. Strangely Tiger Sharks outrebounded Defenders 55-41 including 21 on the offensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Defenders made 7 blocks. American swingman Nigel Jones (201-1990, college: Talladega) fired 24 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. Naturalized American guard DVon Campbell (185-1992, college: Campbellsville) chipped in 15 points and 9 assists. The former international guard Jihad Wright (193-1993, college: UNCP) produced a double-double by scoring 20 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals for lost side. Tiger Sharks' coach Rico Black tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Tiger Sharks will play next round against strong Running Rebels trying to get back on the winning streak. Defenders will try to continue on its current victory against Dream Ballers in Dangriga.
Dream Ballers recorded a loss in Belize City. Visitors were defeated by Running Rebels 80-63. Running Rebels will play against Tiger Sharks in San Pedro in the next round. Dream Ballers will play on the road against Defenders in Belize City to get more than just one victory in their record.
The game with biggest result difference took place in Belize City. Local Hurricanes outscored Tiger Sharks 101-73 on Friday night. Sidibe Bourama stepped up with a double-double by scoring 13 points and 16 rebounds for the winners. At the losing side Jihad Wright responded with a double-double by scoring 19 points and 11 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Hurricanes will meet Western Ballaz in the next round which should be theoretically another easy game. Tiger Sharks will play against Running Rebels and hope to win that game.
In the last game of round 1 Trojans defeated Western Ballaz in Belmopan 71-62.
