NBB Round 19 (Regular Season): Derby game ends with Pinheiros' defeat of Corinthians

The games at this stage are more interesting as they can be crucial for the final standings in Regular Season. Despite we already know who is stronger and who is weaker, there may be still last minute surprises and upsets. Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

The most exciting game was a derby match between two local teams from Sao Paulo: Pinheiros (#1) and Corinthians (#6). Pinheiros (14-2) crushed visiting Corinthians (11-5) by 29 points 109-80. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Corinthians. They outrebounded Corinthians 39-27 including a 27-16 advantage in defensive rebounds. Pinheiros looked well-organized offensively handing out 26 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of American point guard David Sloan (183-1999, college: ETSU) who helped to win the game recording 20 points and 8 assists. contributed with 19 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists (on 8-of-9 shooting from the field) for the winners. American guard Davaunta Thomas (196-1995, college: UAFS) answered with 15 points and 6 rebounds for Corinthians. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Pinheiros have an impressive series of ten victories in a row. They maintain first place with 14-2 record, which they share with Flamengo and Minas. Corinthians at the other side keeps the sixth position with five games lost. Pinheiros is looking forward to face Sao Jose (#7) at home in the next round which should be theoretically another easy game. Corinthians' supporters also look forward to another derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Sao Paulo to the arena Paulistano.
The game in Sao Jose was also worth to mention about. 7th ranked Mogi (9-7) played at the court of eighth ranked Sao Jose (10-6). Sao Jose did not have too big problems and got a relatively easy victory 79-61. It was a great evening for the former international center Maique Tavares (211-1993) who led his team to a victory scoring 18 points (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field). Guilherme Lessa helped adding 13 points. At the losing side point guard Gabriel Campos (181-2001) responded with 18 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Mogi's coach Fernando Penna rotated eleven players seeing no chance for a win. Sao Jose moved-up to seventh place. Mogi lost their fourth game in a row. They dropped to the eighth position with seven games lost. Sao Jose will play against league's leader Pinheiros in Sao Paulo in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Mogi will play on the road against Sesi/Franca (#4) in Sao Paulo and hopes to get back on the winning track.
The game between twelfth ranked U.Corinthians (8-8) and 15th ranked Fortaleza (4-12) in Santa Cruz do Sul on Sunday ended with biggest points difference. U.Corinthians outscored guests from Fortaleza 95-62. It was a quality performance for Devon Scott who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 19 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists. U.Corinthians' coach Rodrigo da Silva felt very confident that he used 10 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Michael Dupree came up with 25 points and 7 rebounds for Cearense in the defeat. U.Corinthians moved-up to tenth place, which they share with Caxias do Sul and UniFacisa. Cearense lost their third game in a row. They keep the fifteenth position with 12 games lost. They share it with Cruzeiro. U.Corinthians will meet at home UniFacisa (#12) in the next round. Cearense will play against Caxias do Sul and hope to secure a win.

Other games in round 19 were not that significant. Bauru was beaten by Sesi/Franca on the road 85-68. Pato won against Osasco on its own court 82-67. UniFacisa unfortunately lost to Caxias do Sul in a road game 80-89. Cruzeiro recorded a loss to Flamengo at home 80-93. Bottom-ranked Vasco was defeated by Minas on the opponent's court 71-59.



Sao Jose - Mogi 79-61

The game in Sao Jose was also worth to mention about. 7th ranked Mogi (9-7) played at the court of eighth ranked Sao Jose (10-6). No shocking result in a game when fourth ranked Vivo/Franca (13-3) beat 11th ranked Paschoalotto/Bauru (8-9) in Sao Paulo 85-68 on Saturday. Sesi/Franca made 33-of-36 free shots (91.7 percent) during the game, while Bauru only scored five points from the stripe. They outrebounded Bauru 41-29 including a 33-22 advantage in defensive rebounds. It was an exceptional evening for international guard Paulo Barbosa (189-2003) who led the winners and scored 17 points and 5 rebounds. International center Lucas Dias (207-1995) accounted for 17 points for the winning side. The former international center Maique Tavares (211-1993) came up with 20 points and point guard Guilherme Lessa (179-1995) added 10 points and 8 rebounds respectively for Bauru in the defeat. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The victory was the seventh consecutive win for Vivo/Franca. It was an exceptional evening for American forward Raekwon Horton (198-2002, college: UTSA) who led the winners and scored 18 points and 6 rebounds. Center Joao Fidelis (205-2001) accounted for 15 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists (perfect from the field making all six shots) for the winning side. Four Pato players scored in double figures. Pato's coach Andre Soares used an eleven-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Center Vinicius Malachias (209-1999) came up with 16 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field) and international center Lucas Dias (207-1995) added 11 points and 6 assists respectively for Osasco in the defeat. Pato moved-up to fourteenth place. Osasco lost their fifth game in a row. They dropped to the eighteenth position with 14 games lost. Pato will meet higher ranked Brasilia (#5) on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Osasco will have a break next round.

There was a small surprise when thirteenth ranked Caxias do Sul (8-8) won against at home 10th ranked UNIFACISA (8-8) 89-80 on Sunday. Caxias do Sul made 26-of-31 free shots (83.9 percent) during the game, while UniFacisa only scored nine points from the stripe. It was an exceptional evening for the former international guard Humberto Silva (196-1995) who led the winners and scored 25 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Augusto Leao accounted for 15 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists for the winning side. Caxias do Sul's coach Rodrigo Barbosa used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games.
