The Regular Season in CUP just started. Here is the last round review presented by LBM Management.

Univ.Concepcion defeated Valdivia at home 97-87. Univ.Concepcion dominated down low during the game scoring 64 of its points in the paint compared to Valdivia's 40. Univ.Concepcion looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of American forward Stephen Maxwell (201-1993, college: CSUN) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 31 points and 11 rebounds (on 12-of-14 shooting from the field). The former international point guard Sebastian Carrasco (180-2000) contributed with 26 points and 6 assists for the winners. Univ.Concepcion's coach used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The former international guard Erik Carrasco (181-1983) answered with 10 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists for Valdivia. Valdivia will play next round against strong Las Animas trying to get back on the winning streak. It will be a derby game for which supporters look forward to, where their team will face at home their local rival from Valdivia - Las Animas. Univ.Concepcion will try to continue on its current victory against Ancud on the road.
Sportiva Italiana recorded a loss in Quilpue. Visitors were defeated by Los Leones 74-65. American forward Jordan Bell (203-1998, college: Pacific) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 18 points, 14 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners and Ignacio Carrion chipped in 16 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists. At the losing side American guard KJ Simon (190-1999, college: UT Martin) responded with 29 points and 5 rebounds. Los Leones will play against Espanol in Talca in the next round. Sportiva Italiana will have a break next round.
An interesting game was also a 33-point tough home loss of Espanol in a game in Talca versus undefeated Colo Colo 81-48. Dennis McKinney nailed 26 points and 6 rebounds for the winning side. Colo Colo's coach felt very confident using entire bench and allowed the starting five to rest. Mohunir Zerene came up with 14 points and 5 rebounds for Espanol in the defeat. Colo Colo's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Santiago to the arena Univ.Catolica.

Other games in round 1 were not that significant. Las Animas were smashed by Puerto Varas on the road 82-62. Univ.Catolica lost to Puente Alto on its own court 69-73. Puerto Varas lost to Univ.Concepcion in a road game 74-82. Sportiva Italiana managed to beat Univ.Catolica at home 79-74. Los Leones lost to Puente Alto on the opponent's court 63-67.

Puerto Varas - Las Animas 82-62

There was a surprise result when Puerto Varas crushed at home Las Animas 82-62 on Friday. Puerto Varas forced 21 Las Animas turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists comparing to just 10 passes made by Las Animas' players. Guard Patricio Arroyo (185-1996) nailed 15 points and 8 assists for the winning side and American forward Andrew Corum (201-1997, college: Virginia St.) accounted for 19 points and 4 assists. Four Puerto Varas players scored in double figures. The former international forward Gianncarlo Caraboni (-1990) came up with 21 points and 6 rebounds and international center Ignacio Ansaldo (198-2003) added 13 points and 10 rebounds respectively for Las Animas in the defeat. Both coaches used bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Puerto Varas will meet Espanol in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Las Animas' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Valdivia to the arena Valdivia.
