LNF Round 9 (Regular Season): Los Leones defeat Sportiva Ita. in the closest game of the week

Here is the last round review presented by LBM Management.

The most exciting game of round 9 in the LNF took place in San Pablo. This derby game ended with only three-point defeat on the road of second-best Sportiva Ita. (7-2) to third ranked Los Leones (6-3) 73-70 on Sunday evening. Los Leones forced 24 Sportiva Ita. turnovers. American center Alexus Johnson (197-1994, college: Texas Southern) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 27 points and 13 rebounds for the winners and her fellow American import forward Akilah Bethel (183-1993, college: LSU) chipped in 10 points and 9 rebounds. The best for the losing side was point guard Martina Pereira (166-2005) with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 16 rebounds. Sportiva Ita.'s coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Los Leones have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain third place with 6-3 record having just two point less than leader Puente Alto. Defending champion Sportiva Ita. keeps the second position with two games lost. Los Leones are looking forward to face Gimnastico (#5) in Vina del Mar in the next round. Sportiva Ita. will play at home against Brisas and is hoping to win this game.
Another exciting game was a derby match between two teams from Santiago: Puente Alto (#1) and Brisas (#6). Puente Alto (8-1) crushed visiting Brisas (1-8) by 35 points 84-49. American guard Kwanza Murray (170-1996, college: Lincoln, PA) nailed 34 points (!!!) for the winning side and Josefa Orrego accounted for 8 points and 6 rebounds. Paulina Henrriquez (-1986) came up with 17 points (went 8 for 8 at the free throw line) for Brisas in the defeat. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Puente Alto have an impressive series of seven victories in a row. They maintain first place with 8-1 record. Brisas at the other side keep the sixth position with eight games lost. Puente Alto's supporters look forward to another derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Santiago Sergio Ceppi.

Espanol lost their third game in a row. They keep the fourth position with five games lost. They share it with Univ. Austral. Univ.Concepcion will meet league's second-placed Alemana in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Espanol will play again against the league's leader Univ.Concepcion and hope to win that game.

In the last two games of round 9 Gimnastico lost to Sergio Ceppi on the opponent's court 58-73. Alemana outscored Puerto Montt in a home game 83-50.

Espanol - Univ.Concepcion 66-92

The game between Top Four teams took place in Talca. 4th placed host Espanol (1-5) was smashed by first ranked Univ.Concepcion (6-1) 92-66. Univ.Concepcion made 27-of-33 free shots (81.8 percent) during the game. They also forced 26 Espanol turnovers. The best player for the winners was American forward Jade Compton (178, college: Presbyterian) who had a double-double by scoring 23 points and 13 rebounds. The former international forward Barbara Cousino (178-1996) chipped in a double-double by scoring 18 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals (went 7 for 7 at the free throw line). Four Univ.Concepcion players scored in double figures. Univ.Concepcion's coach felt very confident using entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. At the other side the best for losing team was Kiera Shields who recorded a double-double by scoring 10 points and 13 rebounds and Argentinian point guard Melina Niz (165-2005, agency: BIG) added 16 points and 5 rebounds respectively. Everything could happen in Santiago at the game between two tied teams. Both fifth ranked Sergio Ceppi and 4th placed Gimnastico had identical 2-6 record. This time Sergio Ceppi used a home court advantage and beat the opponent from Vina del Mar 73-58 on Saturday night. Sergio Ceppi outrebounded Gimnastico 52-40 including 19 on the offensive glass. Sergio Ceppi looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. The best player for the winners was the former international forward Francisca Salvatierra (173-1994) who scored 18 points and 9 rebounds. Center Katalina Garcia (182-1994) chipped in 6 points and 14 rebounds. Sergio Ceppi's coach Roberto Ostoic used entire bench and allowed the starting five to rest. At the other side the best for losing team was Cuban Arleny Gonzalez (185-1987) who recorded 18 points and 6 rebounds and Venezuelan power forward Gisell Ramirez (183-2004) added 7 points and 13 rebounds respectively. The game between closely ranked teams ended with second ranked Alemana's (5-2) home victory over 3rd placed Puerto Montt (3-3) 83-50 on Saturday. Alemana looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. The best player for the winners was Italian-Argentinian Daniela Dublo (184-1988) who had a double-double by scoring 19 points, 14 rebounds and 7 assists. The former international center Ziomara Morrison (194-1989) chipped in a double-double by scoring 20 points and 13 rebounds. Four Alemana P. players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was Italian-Argentinian point guard Regina Carosio (165-1986) who recorded a double-double by scoring 12 points, 15 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals and center Isabel Gonzalez (190-1998, college: Morehead St.) added 17 points respectively. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. The victory was the third consecutive win for Alemana. They maintain second place with 5-2 record behind leader Puente Alto. Loser Puerto Montt keeps the third position with three games lost. Alemana will meet at home league's leader Univ.Concepcion in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week.
