USA wins the championship - Jul. 4,
2006
The 2006
FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Women was concluded at the U.S. Olympic
Training Center in Colorado Spring, Colo., on Sunday night. USA basketball U18
Women's National Team kept its energy up from start to finish and achieved its
gold medal. After the first five minutes of fight, the USA use the very simple
way to defeat Canada with 87-52 (26-15, 20-11, 21-14, 20-12). Though three
weeks, USA head coach and his staff brought 12 individuals together and molded
them into a team.
The USA have five different played scored in double digits, two players scored 8
and 9, Charles Tina 13 points and 13 rebounds.Every team members exert their
energy into the final game and the team like a well-oiled machine. With the huge
difference between rebound and shoot percentage, Canada collaspe ahead of the
USA.
In the bronze medal game, Argentina was slower, shorter and less athletic, but
they were able to pull out a 73-69 victory in overtime over Brazil.

Argentina: THOMAS DIAZ, Sthefan 31 points and 12 rebounds
Brazil: DJANE Dos Santos 17 points and MICHELE Vaz Lopes 17 rebounds.
In the fifth place game, Paraguay ran away with a 80-48 win over Pueto Rico.

Paraguay: MERCADO, Maria 22 points, 13 rebounds and 5 assists
Pueto Rico: BACHOUR, Keisha 12 points PUELLO, Frances 12 rebounds.
USA women's teams now boast of a remarkable 28-2 overall record at this event
and have won gold in 1988, 2000, 2004 and 2006, while capturing silver medals in
1992 and 1996.
USA, Canada, Argentina and Brazil qualified for the FIBA U19 World Championship
for Women in Bratislava, Slovakia.
Stephany Thomas from Argentina was the best player of the tournament leading all
scorers with an average of 22.6 points and also was the leading rebounder with
7.0 per game.
Day 5 - USA wins the
Championship - Jul. 3, 2006
On the last
day of the FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Women, USA beated Canada 85-62 and
won the Gold Medal. USA dominated the first quarter and extended the lead in the
first half 46-26 to clearly win the medal. Italee Lucas and Tina Charles led USA
with 13 points each. Tara Watts had 12 points for Canada.
In the other game Argentina pull out a 73-69 victory in overtime over Brazil to
win the bronze medal. It was the most interesting game of the ending day. The
game was sent to overtime when Sthefany Thomas Diaz hit a free throw with 13
seconds remaining in regulation. Thomas missed the second free throw, but Brazil
was unable to score on their ensuing posession. Argentina was able to go on a
7-2 run to open the five-minute overtime and secure a five point lead Brazil
would not be able to overcome. Argentina was able to hit their free throws, and
contain Brazil to win the Bronze. Thomas is proud of her teammates it was her
that led Argentina, finishing with 31 points, 12 rebounds, and six steals.
Leading Brazil was Julia Pereria Santos with 16 points and six rebounds.
Paraguay ran away with a 70-48 win over Puerto Rico and finished in fifth place.
It was a historic week for Paraguay, which had never previously qualified out of
the South American tournament for the FIBA Americas U18 Championship. Maria
Mercado paved the way for Paraguay with a double-double of 22 points and 13
rebounds, while also dishing out five assists. Puerto Rico's Keisha Bachour came
off the bench for a team-high 12 points, while Michelle Gonzalez had 10 points
and Frances Puello grabbed 12 rebounds.
USA, Canada, Argentina and Brazil qualified for the FIBA U19 World Championship
for Women in Bratislava, Slovakia.

Day 4 - Jul. 2, 2006
Canada was
able to outlast a second half Brazil rally and pull out a 59-55 victory on the
semifinal of the FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Women at the U.S. Olympic
Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Canada dominated the first half,
using pressure defense and a solid offensive game plan to jump out to a 41-19
halftime lead. Canada went on a 12-2 scoring run in the first quarter, which
lasted 3:58, and a 15-2 run over the final 8:17 of the first half. During that
run Brazil went scoreless for the final 6:49 of the half. The second half was
the complete opposite. Brazil used a full court press that helped force some
Canadian turnovers leading to easy Brazilian baskets. While in the press the
Brazilizns were able to use their length advantage to disrupt the Canadian
guards. Ross led the way the entire night for the Canadians totaling 19 points
and 12 rebounds, while Patricia Dos Santos Paulo led Brazil with 17 points five
rebounds and three assists. With the win Canada advances to the gold medal game
of the FIBA Americas U18 Championship For Women Sunday and will face the winnner
of the USA-Argentina game.
In the other semifinal USA dominated Argentina 80-43. Khadijah Rushdan checked
in off the bench to lead four players in double-digit scoring with 14 points.
Thomas Diaz led Argentina with 12 points. With the win, the U.S. earned the
right to advance to the July 2 gold medal game.
Led by Maria Mercado's 21 points, Paraguay earned its first victory after
defeating Costa Rica 80-43. Paraguay advances to the 5th/6th place game and will
meet Puerto Rico, which finished in third place in Group B preliminary play.
Costa Rica had two players contribute a combined 29 of the squad's 43 points.
Yuri Alvarado pitched in 17 and Silvia Penaranda had 12.

Day 3 - Jul. 1, 2006
On the third
day of the FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Women, Argentina defeated Puerto
Rico 71-56 in order to play in the semifinals of the FIBA Americas U18
Championship. Argentina along with Brazil, Canada and USA qualified for the U19
FIBA World Championship for Women. Argentina had a 58-35 lead in the third
quarter and Puerto Rico reacted with a 9-0 run to put the game 58-44. Then later
in the quarter Puerto Rico made a 10-0 run to put the game 66-56 with two
minutes left. Stephany Thomas led Argentina with 35 points and 8 rebounds while
Michelle Gonzalez led Puerto Rico with 13.
In the other game USA dominated Brazil 75-48 to win Group A and end the first
round. USA ended the first round with a 2-0 record and now faces Argentina in
the Semifinal while Brazil takes on Canada. United States won the first half
31-23 and pulled away in the final quarter as they outscored Brazil 24-13.
Victoria Baugh led the balanced attack of USA with 11 points. Djane Brito led
Brazil with 11 points and 7 rebounds.
Canada dominated Costa Rica with 92-28. That was no surprise for the game,
Canada finished the first round with unbeatable results. Boogaard led Canada
with 12 points, while Alvarado scored time-high with 11 points.

Puerto Rico
dominated Costa Rica 77-39 to open the second day of competition in the 2006
FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Women.
The first half ended 36-25 after Costa Rica made a 11-1 run to end the second
quarter.
But Puerto Rico pulled away in the second half with 22 points in the third
quarter to end up 58-36 and outscored Costa Rica 19-3 in the final quarter.
Frances Puello led Puerto Rico with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Yelitza Rivera
had 14 points and Michelle Gonzalez ended with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Silvia Pe�aranda led Costa Rica with 18 points and 5 rebounds.
On day 3 Puerto Rico faces Argentina while Costa Rica takes on Canada.

Paraguay lost to USA in the 2006 FIBA

United
States dominated Paraguay 121-56 in the 2006 FIBA Americas U18
Championship For Women on Wednesday night. USA U18 Women's National Team (1-0)
got out to a 36-12 lead against Paraguay (0-1) and never looked back. In
halftime the score stood at 64-27. Outgunning the South
Americans 31-6 in the third quarter, the U.S. held a
26-23 advantage in the fourth for the eventual 121-56 win.
Paraguay hung tough as much as they could by hitting 14 3-pointers in the game,
and going on scoring runs of 10-2 in the second quarter, and 9-0 to start the
fourth quarter. But by then the game was well in hand after the USA turned up
the pressure and stayed focused in the third quarter, outscoring Paraguay 31-6.
"Our energy level and effort was great tonight," said USA and DePaul University
(Ill.) head coach Doug Bruno. "You can't control the level of the competition,
you can only control our energy and effort, and I thought our players came out
with a high energy level and a high degree of effort."
"I didn't even know I (tied the record)," Baugh said. "I feel like I could have
actually rebounded more, because they were so short. I take it as a good
accomplishment now, and I'll strive for better every game."
"I just did what the coaches ask me to, and I just did what was open, that's my
game." Charles said. "I just like going out and playing hard."
Tina Charles led a four-player double-double charge with 20 points and 10
rebounds. Victoria Baugh notched 14 points and 13 boards, Jayne Appel checked in
for 11 and 11, while Jantel Lavender had 10 points and 12 caroms. Additionally,
Italee Lucas posted 15 points.
Monica Vega led Paraguay with 16 points.
On day 2 USA has the day off and Paraguay faces Brazil.

Keane led Canada with 18 points and was followed by Krista Phillips who
had 14. Romina Pesante led Argentina with 19 points. Canada held a late rally by
Argentina and defeated them 64-53. The first half ended 36-20 in favor of the
Canadians led by Kalisha Keane who had 7 points and 5 rebounds. Argentina closed
the game in the third quarter and made a 11-0 run in the fourth quarter to put
the game 50-46 with 3 minutes left. Canada has a 2-0 record and Argentina is
1-1. On the third day Canada faces Costa Rica and Argentina faces Puerto Rico.

Leading the charge for the Brazilians were Julia Pereira Santos with 19
points, Djane Dos Santos posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds,
Angela Braglin chipped in 10 and Michele Vaz Lopez, who scored nine points, had
a game-high 14 rebounds. Perez scored a team-best 13 points and added five
rebounds on the night. Brazil not only dominated in the scoring column, but on
the glass as well, owning a 72-33 rebounding advantage. They also shot 42.9
percent (33-77 FGs), while limiting Paraguay to just 23.9 percent (16-67 FGs).
Additionally, Brazil held Paraguay, which made 14 3-pointers against the USA on
Wednesday, to just six 3-point field goals.
