Leones - Rivas 129-48 There was no surprise in Managua where bottom-ranked Rivas (0-5) were crushed by sixth ranked Leones (3-2) 129-48 on Saturday. Leones held Rivas to an opponent 25.0 percent shooting from the field compared to 65.8 percent accuracy of the winners. Leones forced 30 Rivas turnovers and outrebounded them 45-29 including a 38-18 advantage in offensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists comparing to just 9 passes made by Rivas' players. It was a great evening for Colombian center Chyse Webster (204-2000) who led his team to a victory scoring 15 points and 7 rebounds (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field). American guard Augustus Stone (193-1997, college: St.Thomas, FL) helped adding 21 points (on 8-of-9 shooting from the field). Four Leones players scored in double figures. At the losing side American forward Kelvin Rivera (168-1996, college: RU Camden) responded with 10 points and 5 rebounds and Kurlam Chamorro (189-1989) scored 12 points. Leones moved-up to fourth place. Loser Rivas still closes the standings with five games lost. The biggest surprise took place in Esteli where host Real Esteli (4-2) edged league's leader Caribbean Coast (4-1) 96-95 on Thursday evening. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Caribbean Coast. Real Esteli made 21-of-26 free shots (80.8 percent) during the game. They also forced 24 Caribbean Coast turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. 25 personal fouls committed by Caribbean Coast helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. American-Puerto Rican Christopher Gaston (201-1989, college: Fordham) fired a double-double by scoring 22 points, 17 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners. The former international swingman Jared Ruiz (188-1992) chipped in 24 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists. Real Esteli's coach David Rosario used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. Puerto Rican power forward Owens Perez (206-1992) produced a double-double by scoring 23 points, 31 rebounds and 7 assists and Puerto Rican guard Luis Lopez (182-1998, college: PR-Mayaguez) added 29 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists respectively for lost side. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Despite that victory Real Esteli went down to third position due to points difference. Caribbean Coast at the other side dropped to the second place with one game lost. They were replaced at the leadership position by Leon. Caribbean Coast will play next round against Tigres trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Real Esteli will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Visiting Real Esteli was defeated by UNI Basket in a tough game on the road 62-66. UNI Basket forced 21 Real Esteli turnovers. Strangely Real Esteli outrebounded UNI Basket 49-37 including 34 on the offensive glass. It was a great evening for American forward Jayson Brower (195-1996, college: John Jay) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 11 rebounds. His fellow American import forward Tyler Morman (206-1997, college: Southern Miss) helped adding 11 points and 15 rebounds. At the losing side American-Puerto Rican Christopher Gaston (201-1989, college: Fordham) responded with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 11 rebounds and the former international swingman Jared Ruiz (188-1992) scored 11 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Four Real Esteli players scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. UNI Basket moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Brumas. Loser Real Esteli dropped to the third position with two games lost. Leon edged 4th placed Brumas at home 80-77. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Brumas. Worth to mention a great performance of Dominican center Jose Familia (201-1998) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 11 points, 19 rebounds and 7 assists. Dominican Xavier de la Rosa (196-1991) contributed with 21 points and 6 assists for the winners. Four Leon players scored in double figures. Leon's coach Jorge Velez allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. Cuban center Marvin Cairo (203-1991) answered with 26 points and 5 assists and Cuban Alejandro Alvarez (195-1992, agency: BIG) added 16 points and 5 assists in the effort for Brumas. Leon have a solid series of three victories in a row. As mentioned above they took over a top position. Brumas at the other side dropped to the fifth place with three games lost. They share the position with UNI Basket.
