The 2014 BSN Puerto Rican League is officially over. The Leones de Ponce were crowned champions last night at a sold out Auditorio Juan Pachin Vicens in Ponce. The home crowd was in a complete frenzy hours before the game as they all anticipated their first national championship since 2004. The home team didnt disappoint obtaining an impressive 88-75 victory after having just manhandled the Capitanes less than 24 hours previously in a huge game five victory. Ponce was led in this one by Angel Daniel Vasallo (21 points, 5 rebounds), Mike Harris (198-SF-83, college: Rice) (16 points, 11 rebounds), Ike Diogu (11 points, 11 rebounds) and Carlitos Rivera (13 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists) in a complete team effort. The Leones came out the gate poised to close out the series but Arecibo withstood the attack in the second quarter to take the lead at haftime. However, the Leones regained momentum during the third quarter and two crazy events really did the Capitanes astray though Ponce was simply too dominant. Renaldo Balkman did everything in his power to steer his team back in play but was clearly limping around and not 100%. The northerners also lost valuable swingman Leandro Garcia Morales during the third quarter in what seemed a pretty serios injury. A shot clock incident in which it suddenly came crshing down on top of a camera man halted play for about 30 minutes before league officials took the necesarry action to resume play. It was pretty much all Ponce the rest of the way despite a late rally. The Capitanes were led by benchmen David Cortes (16 points, 4 three-pointers) and Shawn Redhage (17 points, 9 rebounds). Mike Harris was named Finals MVP with his stellar average of 19 points and 13 rebounds per game. Ponce is third all-time in BSN championships with its 13th in 2014, only behind Vaqueros de Bayamon and Atleticos de San German.
