Gian Clavell
Puerto Rico qualified for the 2022 AmeriCup after beating Mexico and Bahamas in the last window played in San Juan.
They started by defeating Mexico 80-70 by finishing the game with a 15-1 run in the last four and a half minutes. Gian Clavell (193-G-93, college: Colorado St.) led the way with 23 points, including two key three-pointers at clutch time to regain the lead. Shabazz Napier had 13 points and 5 assists in his debut with the Puerto Rican team.
On Saturday they beat Bahamas 102-97 led again by Clavell with 26 points and J.J. Barea had a great all-around performance with 26 points, 8 assists and 7 rebounds. Napier added 22 points with 7 assists and 5 rebounds. Once again Clavell lifted Puerto Rico after being down by nine points at the end of the third quarter.
Now Puerto Rico focuses on the Olympic Qualifier to be played in Serbia on June 29 until July 4. Their first game is against Senegal on June 29 and then face Italy on July 1. The national team is expected to play warm-up games in Greece prior to the tournament.
