In what manner do the Denver Nuggets sustain their championship aspirations?

Their success is not exclusively dependent on the health and skill of two-time MVP Nikola Jokic, the spectacular performance of PG Jamal Murray, the offensive brilliance of Michael Porter Jr., or the determination of Aaron Gordon. The essence of their success is cultivating emerging players stepping in to replace significant departures from their 2023 NBA championship group, notably the astute defender Bruce Brown and the multifaceted two-way star Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.

Julian Strawther is among the developing talents, having had his responsibilities substantially increased during his second year in the NBA spotlight.

Denver’s Most Important Backup

Justin Holiday and Reggie Jackson, the two seasoned players with the highest bench minutes, are no longer present. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope has departed from the starting lineup, this presumably promoted Christian Braun, post-season, from his role as Denver's seventh man. A lot has changed since then, and as we’re two months into the 2024/25 NBA season, a new Nuggets talent is showing great promise as one of Puerto Rico’s finest, Julian Strawther, continues to evolve in the big leagues.

It hasn’t always been plain sailing, though; Strawther has fought for his respect, which is why this dark horse has been an unsuspecting talent this term.

Strawther comes back strong in season two

Before a knee injury that hindered Julian Strawther for over a month, the 29th selection in the 2023 NBA Draft was fulfilling a steady position on Denver's bench. Strawther participated in 33 of 36 games before the injury, recording double-digit minutes throughout 22 of those contests. The Nuggets coaching staff did not fully trust him. However, head coach Michael Malone continually allowed Strawther to increase his playing time.

Notwithstanding subpar shooting efficiency metrics (36.9 FG%, 29.7 3P%, 48.2 TS%), Strawther regularly showed sound methodology in his execution inside Denver's bench offense. He was a defensively inadequate player but exerted effort in that aspect. He executed many connecting passes that demonstrated high basketball intelligence and comprehension, indicating a promising future. Regrettably, the injury compelled the Nuggets to reevaluate their postseason prospects, and the incorporation of Justin Holiday into Strawther’s rotation position has shown to be a beneficial addition.

Entering Year 2 without Caldwell-Pope or Holiday, Julian Strawther is slowly but surely proving to become Denver's most significant bench player.

Denver Nuggets NBA Championship Odds

Who will elevate the championship trophy to conclude the NBA season? The Celtics are favored to win the championship in 2025 with odds of -225 set by US sportsbooks available, but with backups like Strawther performing how he has, continued form on this level has the makings to see the Nuggets relive their glory of 2023.

Why Strawther is a valuable asset for the Nuggets

Strawther's capacity to perform as both a shooter and a defender against rival perimeter threats has rendered him a significant asset for the Nuggets. Nonetheless, the club encounters difficulties; they had a 126-122 loss to the LA Clippers, with Strawther providing a notable performance of 15 points, shooting 2-for-3 from three-point range and 6-for-7 from the field. The Nuggets now hold a record of 12-10, facing challenges in establishing reliable depth surrounding their best players as they prepare to raise their seventh-placed Western Conference position.

Optimism-fuelled with Strawther

Nonetheless, the Nuggets remain optimistic about Strawther's progress. He is averaging 9 points with a shooting percentage of 46.3% from the field and 40.8% from three-point range in around 20.8 minutes off the bench, demonstrating considerable improvement relative to his rookie season, during which he averaged only 4.5 points and shot 36.9% overall.

Nuggets head coach Michael Malone put it best with a short yet sweet comment regarding his rising star:

He is an essential contributor from the bench. He has evolved into a reliable team defender, and we must continue to nurture his growth.

A standout performance versus the Hawks

Don’t believe Strawther’s success has been early-season fortune either. This Latin standout was on fire in the Nuggets' most recent clash with the Hawks.

Strawther concluded Sunday's 141-111 victory against the Atlanta Hawks with 13 points (5-6 FG, 3-4 3Pt), two rebounds, and three assists in 22 minutes of play.

Strawther topped the bench in scoring, achieving his most efficient performance with over five shot attempts this season. The 22-year-old forward has delivered a significant impact off the bench this season. In the club's previous two games alone, with Jamal Murray (hamstring) out, Strawther has accumulated:

31 points (12-19 FG, 5-9 3Pt, 2-2 FT), five assists, five rebounds, two blocks, and three steals in 55 total minutes.

The future is bright; the future is Strawther!
