SLB Round 18: Llaneros beat Diablos in a derby game

There were many interesting games last round. The round ended with derby games and favorites losing the games. Here is the last round review presented by ESL.

The most interesting game was a derby match between two local teams from Caracas: Llaneros (#6) and Diablos (#4). Llaneros (8-8) smashed visiting Diablos (9-7) by 39 points 105-66. Llaneros looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Llaneros made 7 blocks. The best player for the winners was Francisco Marquez (190-93) who scored 38 points (!!!) and 5 rebounds. Center Carlos Rodriguez (206-89) chipped in 13 points, 21 rebounds and 6 blocks (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field). At the other side the best for losing team was international forward Anyelo Cisneros (198-97) who recorded a double-double by scoring 15 points and 12 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Llaneros have an impressive five-game winning streak. They moved-up to fourth place, which they share with 3 other teams. Diablos lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the fourth position with seven games lost.
Another interesting game was again a derby between two teams from Caracas: Cocodrilos (#2) and Brillantes (#8). Cocodrilos (13-3) smashed visiting Brillantes (3-13) by 22 points 80-58. It was a good game for forward Jovanni Diaz (203-90) who led his team to a victory with 12 points. Kelvin Caraballo contributed with 8 points and 9 rebounds for the winners. Cocodrilos' coach Nelson Solorzano felt very confident that he used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Neill Ojeda (190-91) replied with 12 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists for Brillantes. Cocodrilos maintains second position with 13-3 record having just three points less than leader Spartans. Brillantes lost third consecutive game. They keep the eighth place with 13 games lost.
An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Puerto Ordaz. Top-ranked Guaiqueries faced second-best Gigantes. Guests from Porlamar (16-0) smashed host Gigantes (11-5) 79-57. It ended at the same time the seven-game winning streak of Gigantes. Leonardo Palacios scored 21 points to lead the charge for the winners. Coach Nicolas Casalanguida's team controlled all game and the coach could let to play all 12 players and allowed the starting five to rest. The best for the losing side was Luis Duarte with a double-double by scoring 19 points and 11 rebounds. Undefeated Guaiqueries have an impressive 16-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 16-0 record. Gigantes at the other side dropped to the third place with five games lost.
We should not miss the game where eighth ranked Cangrejeros (3-11) against higher ranked Indios (8-8) where Cangrejeros won at home by nineteen points 71-52. Amos Acosta notched 11 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists to lead the effort. Both coaches used bench players and allowed the starting five to get some rest. Cangrejeros maintains eighth position with 3-11 record. Indios at the other side keep the fourth place with eight games lost.
Leader Spartans delivered the fourteenth victory on Monday night. This time they beat 7th ranked Bucaneros (6-10) 77-62 in Caracas. The best player for the winners was Yohanner Sifontes who scored 17 points and 4 assists (perfect from the field making all six shots). Spartans' coach Pablo Favarel used a ten-player rotation and allowed the starting five to get some rest. Spartans (14-2) have an impressive six-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains first position. Loser Bucaneros keep the seventh place with ten games lost.

Rest of the games of round 18 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
Trotamundos defeated Centauros in La Asuncion 73-55. Condores were beaten by Taurinos at home 59-75. Heroes were destroyed by Broncos on the opponent's court 78-57.



Centauros - Trotamundos 55-73

There was no surprise in Margarita where 6th ranked Centauros (6-9) were defeated by third ranked Trotamundos (12-4) 73-55 on Sunday. Trotamundos dominated down low during the game scoring 46 of its points in the paint compared to Centauros' 26. They outrebounded Centauros 51-29 including a 38-21 advantage in defensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was the former international center Miguel Marriaga (205-84) who had a double-double by scoring 13 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks. Power forward Carlos Milano (198-85) chipped in 8 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists. At the other side the best for losing team was point guard Luis Moreno (178-1) who recorded 9 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists and center Manuel Canaval (206-93, college: Huston-Tillotson) added 6 points and 6 rebounds respectively. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to get some rest. Trotamundos have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to second place. Centauros lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the sixth position with nine games lost.

An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Puerto Ordaz. Top-ranked Guaiqueries faced second-best Gigantes. Guests from Porlamar (16-0) smashed host Gigantes (11-5) 79-57. It ended at the same time the seven-game winning streak of Gigantes. Guaiqueries had a 34-22 advantage in offensive rebounds. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Guaiqueries made 7 blocks. International point guard Leonardo Palacios (186-94) scored 21 points to lead the charge for the winners and international Gendry Correa (190-96) chipped in 12 points and 6 rebounds during the contest. We should not miss the game where eighth ranked Cangrejeros (3-11) against higher ranked Indios (8-8) where Cangrejeros won at home by nineteen points 71-52. Cangrejeros players were unselfish on offense dishing 22 assists. Guard Amos Acosta (180-96) notched 11 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists to lead the effort and swingman Jesus Ramos (187-97) supported him with 21 points. Four Cangrejeros players scored in double figures. Even 14 points and 7 rebounds by naturalized Dominican power forward Jhoyfer Diaz (200-87) did not help to save the game for Indios. The best player for the winners was forward Maikel Avila (198-92, college: Ranger CC) who had a double-double by scoring 11 points and 11 rebounds. International guard Luis Betancourt (183-2) chipped in 11 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Four Taurinos players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was guard Kervin Perez (191-97) who recorded 7 points and 8 assists and power forward Erick Rodriguez (201-99) added 13 points respectively.
