SPB Round 2 (Regular Season): Marinos keep a leadership position

There were only 2 rounds played so far and it's still very beginning of the Regular Season in SPB. Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

Marinos defeated Guaiqueries in Puerto La Cruz 78-66. The best player for the winners was the former international forward Luis Bethelmy (200-1986) who had a double-double by scoring 13 points and 10 rebounds. American guard Landers Nolley II (201-2000, college: Cincinnati) chipped in 19 points. American forward Alphonso Anderson (198, college: Pacific) produced 26 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists for the guests. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Guaiqueries will have a break next week, which should allow them to rest in order to get back on the winning path. Marinos will try to continue on its current victory against Cocodrilos in Caracas.
Toros recorded a loss in Maracay. Hosts were defeated by Llaneros 76-72. French center Ludgy Debaut (213, college: ECU, agency: Helping Ballers) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 12 rebounds. Dion Wright contributed with 14 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. The former international swingman Jose Vargas (195-1982, agency: Pro Sports) replied with 16 points and 9 rebounds for Toros. Toros' coach Jorge Arrieta tried various players' combinations and tested in total twelve players in this game, but that didn't help. Llaneros' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Caracas to the arena .
Another interesting game was a derby match between two local teams from Caracas: Panteras and Diablos. Diablos were smashed at home by 23 points 58-81 and even the fact of playing on their own court did not help. Evert Bernal scored 17 points and 9 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners. Edry Gonzalez responded with 16 points and 5 assists. Diablos' coach gave up on the game allowing to play twelve players seeing no chance for a win. Panteras will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Diablos will play against Piratas in La Guaira and hope to win that game.

Rest of the games of round 2 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
winless Frontinos were crushed by Pioneros in Caracas 82-59. Gaiteros lost to undefeated Heroes at home 58-64. Winless Brillantes lost to undefeated Spartans on the opponent's court 83-89. Gladiadores managed to outperform Broncos in a home game 93-84.
The best stats of 2nd round was 21 points and 12 rebounds by Jhonatan Araujo of Broncos.



Pioneros - Frontinos 82-59

Pioneros used a home court advantage and crushed the opponent from Tachira 82-59 on Thursday night. Pioneros outrebounded Frontinos 43-30 including 32 on the defensive glass. American-Dominican Fausto Pichardo (203-1995, college: Alabama St.) scored 16 points and 8 rebounds (perfect from the field making all seven shots !!!) to lead the charge for the winners and naturalized Dominican power forward Jhoyfer Diaz (200-1987) chipped in 17 points and 6 rebounds during the contest. Four Pioneros players scored in double figures. Jean Payen (193-2003) responded with 14 points and guard Alan Cabrera (182-2001) scored 13 points. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Pioneros will meet Trotamundos in the next round. Frontinos will play against Toros in Maracay and hope to win that game.

No shocking result in a game in Maracaibo where Heroes defeated Gaiteros 64-58 on Thursday. Heroes forced 22 Gaiteros turnovers. Forward Kelvin Caraballo (198-1988) had a double-double by scoring 10 points and 12 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and American Andre Nation (196-1993, college: JMU) chipped in 9 points during the contest. American swingman Micheal Warren (196-1995, college: CSUN) responded with 17 points and his fellow American import forward Jerry Evans (203-1990, college: Nevada) scored 7 points and 10 rebounds. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Heroes will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Gaiteros will play against Centauros and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Spartans made 10 blocks. American forward Will Davis II (203-1992, college: UC Irvine) scored 19 points, 9 rebounds and 4 blocks to lead the charge for the winners and the other American import forward Gokul Natesan (196-1994, college: Colorado Mines, agency: Haylett Sports) chipped in 18 points during the contest. Four Spartans players scored in double figures.
