SPB Round 8 (Regular Season): Top-ranked Gaiteros win another game

Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

SPB top team - Gaiteros (8-0) had no problems winning another game on Thursday. This time they crushed fourteenth ranked Llaneros (0-7) in Maracaibo 81-50. Gaiteros dominated down low during the game scoring 48 of its points in the paint compared to Llaneros' 28. Gaiteros forced 19 Llaneros turnovers. Dominican forward Miguel Simon (203-1994, college: ASA CC) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 14 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists. Swingman Luis Duarte (190-1994) contributed with 10 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners. point guard Humberto Bompart (183-1994) replied with 11 points and 5 rebounds for Llaneros. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Undefeated Gaiteros have an impressive eight-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 8-0 record. Llaneros at the other side still closes the standings with seven games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.
The game in Tachira was also worth to mention about. Fourth ranked Pioneros (5-1) played at the court of 5th ranked Frontinos (4-3). Pioneros managed to secure a 6-point victory 86-80. Worth to mention a great performance of American Tim Bond (201-1995, college: EMU) who helped to win the game recording 25 points and 9 rebounds and Eliezer Montano who added 17 points and 7 rebounds during the contest. American Akia Pruitt (203-1997, college: UNCP) responded with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 10 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Pioneros moved-up to second place, which they share with Spartans. Frontinos at the other side keep the fifth position with three games lost. They share it with Gladiadores. Pioneros will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Frontinos will play again at home against the league's second-placed Pioneros (#2) and hope to get back on the winning track.

Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Defending champion moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Frontinos. Loser Guaiqueries keep the ninth position with four games lost. They share it with Panteras and Brillantes. Gladiadores will again meet at home Guaiqueries (#10) in the next round where they are favorite. Guaiqueries will have a break next round.

In the last game of round 8 Panteras were smashed by Marinos on the road 87-56.



Gladiadores - Guaiqueries 93-91

A very close game took place in Caracas between Gladiadores and Guaiqueries. Sixth ranked Gladiadores (4-3) got a very close home victory over 9th ranked Guaiqueries (2-4). Gladiadores managed to escape with a 2-point win 93-91 on Thursday evening. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Guaiqueries. Gladiadores made 21-of-27 free shots (77.8 percent) during the game. They outrebounded Guaiqueries 40-25 including 29 on the defensive glass. The winners were led by international point guard Gregory Vargas (181-1986) who scored that evening 21 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists and Costa Rican-Belizean Charles Garcia (204-1988, college: Seattle) supported him with 20 points and 6 rebounds (was perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line !!!). Four Gladiadores players scored in double figures. Even 23 points and 6 rebounds by Brazilian center Joao Franca (215-1998) did not help to save the game for Guaiqueries. American Matt Mobley (194-1994, college: St.Bonaventure) added 18 points and 5 assists for the guests. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Defending champion moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Frontinos. Loser Guaiqueries keep the ninth position with four games lost. They share it with Panteras and Brillantes. Bond is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. American Akia Pruitt (203-1997, college: UNCP) responded with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 10 rebounds and his fellow American import guard Mardrez McBride (188, college: Georgia) scored 18 points and 4 assists. No shocking result in a game when fifth ranked Marinos (5-2) crushed 10th ranked Panteras (2-4) in Puerto La Cruz 87-56 on Thursday. Marinos forced 19 Panteras turnovers and outrebounded them 33-22 including 23 on the defensive glass. Marinos looked well-organized offensively handing out 27 assists comparing to just 11 passes made by Panteras' players. The winners were led by American-Kosovan Shawn Jones (203-1992, college: MTSU) who scored that evening 20 points and 8 rebounds and the former international forward Luis Bethelmy (200-1986) supported him with 12 points and 6 rebounds. Four Marinos players scored in double figures. Even 19 points by the former international swingman Enderson Alcala (195-2001) did not help to save the game for Panteras. Jhonatan Acosta (197-1996) added 11 points and 5 rebounds for the guests. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Marinos moved-up to fourth place. Loser Panteras dropped to the ninth position with four games lost. They share it with Guaiqueries and Brillantes. Marinos will again meet at home Panteras (#11) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Panteras will have a break next round.
