Superliga Profesional de Baloncesto (SPB) 2026 has lost another franchise with only a few days to start the regular season (March 7th), as Frontinos del Tachira has announced that the team will not participate this year.
Frontinos had been the first franchise to start preseason work in San Cristobal, Tachira and the press release doesn't explain the reason for their decision. However, it was informed through national media that the team president, Alexander Vargas , had been detained by national government authorities. The SPB also issued a statement saying that it will modify the format to reduce from 14 to 13 participating teams. It will no longer be played by Conferences and all 13 teams will be in a single group, playing 24 games each in the regular season (two against each other franchise). Then, the first 7 teams will advance to the playoffs and the 8th and 9th team in the standings will decide the other qualified team through a "Play In" series (three games max). From then on, a best-of-seven format will be used for the Quarter Finals, Semifinals and the Finals. A new version of the full season schedule is yet to be released. Some of this team's players were taken through an online emergency draft. Brillantes selected Alan Cabrera (182-G-2001), Cocodrilos selected Christians Gutierrez (190-G/F-1996, college: E.Nazarene) and Marinos selected Eduardo Rios (198-PF-1988). |
