NBB Round 5: Vivo/Franca edge Corinthians by three points

It's still too early stage of the Regular Season in NBB, but even now we can clearly see the differece between stronger teams and outsiders. Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

The most exciting game of round 5 in the NBB took place in Sao Paulo. This derby game ended with only three-point home defeat of 5th ranked Corinthians (3-3) to leader Vivo/Franca (6-0) 85-82 on Thursday evening. Vivo/Franca outrebounded Corinthians 44-31 including a 18-6 advantage in offensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. The best player for the winners was international center Lucas Silva (208-1995) who scored 31 points and 9 rebounds. The former international point guard Georginho de Paula (197-1996) chipped in 18 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Center Maique Tavares (210-1993) produced 29 points and 7 rebounds for the hosts. Undefeated Vivo/Franca have an impressive series of six victories in a row. They keep a position of league leader. Corinthians at the other side dropped to the eighth place with three games lost. They share the position with Minas and Paulistano. Vivo/Franca are looking forward to face bottom-ranked Fortaleza (#17) at home in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Corinthians will play against Pato (#16) in Pato Branco and is hoping to prove to their supporters that this time they can win.
Another exciting game was a derby match between two teams from Sao Paulo: Sao Paulo (#4) and Corinthians (#5). Sao Paulo (4-1) won against visiting Corinthians (3-3) 78-72. The former international point guard Elinho Corazza (191-1989, college: Miami Dade CC) orchestrated the victory by scoring 14 points, 6 rebounds and 9 assists. Cordero Bennett contributed with 18 points for the winners. American guard Davaunta Thomas (196-1995, college: UAFS) answered with 28 points and 7 rebounds for Corinthians. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Sao Paulo moved-up to third place, which they share with Bauru. Corinthians at the other side dropped to the eighth position with three games lost. They share it with Minas and Paulistano. Sao Paulo will play against Paschoalotto/Bauru (#3) at home in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Corinthians will play against Pato (#16) in Pato Branco and hopes to get back on the winning track.

Other games of round 5 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
Brasilia was defeated by Caxias do Sul in a road game 86-76. Bauru beat Sao Jose at home 94-76. Flamengo won against Pinheiros on the opponent's court 74-65. UniFacisa unfortunately lost to Paulistano in a home game 61-72. Cerrado recorded a loss to Caxias do Sul on the road 67-82. Minas defeated U.Corinthians on its own court 81-75. Sesi Franca smashed Pato Basquete in Sao Paulo 94-70.

Corinthians - Sesi Franca 82-85

There was a minor upset when their close opponent Brasilia (2-4) was defeated on the road by ninth ranked Caxias do Sul (3-1) 86-76 on Thursday. Forward Diego Conceicao (199-1987) stepped up and scored 13 points and 8 rebounds for the winners and the former international guard Humberto Silva (196-1995) chipped in 15 points and 5 rebounds. Caxias do Sul's coach Rodrigo Barbosa allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Victor Leal (203-1996) responded with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 10 rebounds and the former international point guard Ricardo Fischer (183-1991) scored 13 points and 6 assists. Five Caxias do Sul and four Brasilia players scored in double figures. Caxias do Sul moved-up to fifth place. Loser Brasilia dropped to the twelfth position with four games lost. Caxias do Sul will meet Sao Jose (#11) on the road in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Brasilia will have a break next round.

Paschoalotto/Bauru made 16-of-21 free shots (76.2 percent) during the game. The former international guard Danilo Fuzaro (193-1994) stepped up and scored 22 points and 5 assists (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field) for the winners and international guard Alex Garcia (190-1980, agency: Interperformances) chipped in 15 points and 6 assists. Power forward Renato Carbonari (202-1987) responded with a double-double by scoring 19 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists and Argentinian point guard Diego Figueredo (185-1991, agency: BIG) scored 11 points and 8 assists. Five Paschoalotto/Bauru and four Sao Jose players scored in double figures. Sao Jose's coach Sebastian Luis Figueredo rotated eleven players seeing no chance for a win. The victory was the fourth consecutive win for Paschoalotto/Bauru. They moved-up to third place, which they share with Sao Paulo. Loser Sao Jose dropped to the eleventh position with three games lost. Paschoalotto/Bauru will meet Sao Paulo (#4) on the road in the next round. Sao Jose will play against Caxias do Sul (#5) and hope to secure a win.

Very expected game in Sao Paulo where 7th ranked Pinheiros (3-2) was defeated by first ranked Flamengo (6-1) 74-65 on Thursday. Argentinian point guard Jose Vildoza (191-1996, agency: Octagon Europe) stepped up and scored 24 points and 4 assists for the winners and the former international forward Rafael Mineiro (208-1988) chipped in 16 points and 7 rebounds. The former international forward Rafael Munford (195-1998, college: Augusta) responded with 21 points and 7 rebounds and the former international Jefferson Andrade (207-1983) scored 9 points and 10 rebounds. Pinheiros' coach David Pelosini rotated twelve players in this game, but that didn't help. Despite that victory Flamengo went down to second position due to points difference. Loser Pinheiros dropped to the sixth place with two games lost. They share the position with UniFacisa. Flamengo will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Point guard Adyel Borges (188-2002) stepped up and scored 21 points (was perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line !!!) for the winners and forward Bruno Cardoso (197-2002) chipped in 13 points. Paulistano's coach Demetrius Ferraciu used entire bench saving starting five for next games. Panamanian-American point guard Trevor Gaskins (188-1989, college: Louisiana Tech, agency: Pro Sports) responded with 15 points and guard Caue Freitas (192-1988) scored 7 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. The victory was the third consecutive win for Paulistano. They moved-up to eighth place, which they share with Minas and Corinthians. Loser UNIFACISA dropped to the sixth position with two games lost. They share it with Pinheiros. Paulistano's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Sao Paulo Pinheiros.

There was no surprise in Pato Branco where 14th ranked Pato (1-5) was crushed by leader Vivo/Franca (6-0) 94-70 on Saturday. Vivo/Franca made 16-of-17 free shots (94.1 percent) during the game. Vivo/Franca outrebounded Pato 40-27 including a 31-18 advantage in defensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists comparing to just 11 passes made by Pato's players. International center Lucas Silva (208-1995) stepped up and scored 17 points and 7 assists for the winners and the former international point guard Georginho de Paula (197-1996) chipped in 14 points and 8 rebounds. Four Vivo/Franca players scored in double figures. Vivo/Franca's coach Helinho Garcia felt very confident that he used 10 players saving starting five for next games. Colombian guard Romario Roque (180-1998) responded with 22 points and 4 assists and center Gabriel Novaes (208-2001) scored 12 points and 5 rebounds. The victory was the sixth consecutive win for Vivo/Franca. They keep a position of league leader. Loser Pato dropped to the fifteenth place with five games lost. They share the position with Cerrado.
