LBF Round 14 (Regular Season): SESI lose to Mesquita

The games at this stage are more interesting as they can be crucial for the final standings in Regular Season. Despite we already know who is stronger and who is weaker, there may be still last minute surprises and upsets. Here is the last round review presented by LBM Management.

The most important game in the last round took place in Mesquita between second ranked SESI (13-3) and seventh ranked Mesquita (6-10) on Thursday night. SESI was defeated by Mesquita in a tough game on the road 69-75. It ended at the same time the eight-game winning streak of SESI. Mesquita made 20-of-25 free shots (80.0 percent) during the game. They also forced 28 SESI turnovers. Strangely SESI outrebounded Mesquita 47-33 including 19 on the offensive glass. American swingman Connie Clarke (178-2001, college: MWSU, agency: Interperformances) orchestrated the victory by scoring 20 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 7 steals. The other American import guard Jayla Crawford (170-2000, college: Alabama St., agency: Interperformances) contributed with 22 points for the winners. The former international power forward Aline Moura (185-1997) replied with a double-double by scoring 22 points and 18 rebounds for SESI. SESI's coach Fabio Appolinario rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Mesquita maintains seventh position with 6-10 record. SESI at the other side keeps the second place with three games lost. They share the position with Campinas. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.
Very important is a road loss of third ranked Campinas (13-3) against fourth ranked Cerrado (12-5) on Thursday night. Visiting Campinas was defeated by Cerrado in Brasilia 81-65. International forward Vanessa Goncalves (180-1994) scored 22 points and 6 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and Taina Paixao chipped in 16 points and 5 rebounds during the contest. The former international power forward Leticia Rodrigues (187-1995) responded with 14 points and 5 rebounds. Campinas' coach Babi Honorio tested ten players seeing no chance for a win. Cerrado have a solid four-game winning streak. They maintain fourth position with 12-5 record. Campinas at the other side dropped to the second place with three games lost. They share the position with SESI. Cerrado will play against Santo Andre (#5) on the road in the next round. Campinas will play against Recife and hopes to get back on the winning track.
LBF top team - Sampaio (15-1) had no problems winning another game on Friday. This time they crushed fifth ranked Santo Andre (8-8) in Sampaio Basquete 78-53. Monique Soares notched a double-double by scoring 10 points and 10 rebounds to lead the effort. Sampaio's coach felt very confident using 11 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Even 6 points and 12 rebounds by Clarissa Dos Santos did not help to save the game for Santo Andre. Sampaio maintains first position with 15-1 record. Loser Santo Andre keeps the fifth place with eight games lost. Sampaio will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Santo Andre will play against Cerrado (#4) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

In the last two games of round 14 Sao Jose smashed Recife on the road 67-48. Bottom-ranked Salvador was destroyed by Sao Jose on its own court 40-101.
The most impressive performance of 14th round was 13 points and 4 assists by Rayane De Freitas of Sao Jose.

Recife - Sao Jose 48-67

No shocking result in a game when sixth ranked Sao Jose (8-9) crushed 9th ranked Recife (3-14) in Gloria do Goita 67-48 on Wednesday. Sao Jose forced 21 Recife turnovers. Guard Barbara Schlichting (164-2008) notched 10 points and 7 rebounds to lead the effort and guard Rayane De Freitas (173-1997) supported her with 13 points. Even 7 points and 10 rebounds by center Jenyff Moura (185-2001) did not help to save the game for Recife. Guard Ana Rodrigues (164-2003) added 7 points and 6 assists for the hosts. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Sao Jose maintains sixth position with 8-9 record. Loser Recife dropped to the eighth place with 14 games lost. They share the position with Maringa. Sao Jose will meet at home Maringa (#8) in the next round. Recife will play against the league's second-placed Campinas and hope to secure a win.

LBF top team - Sampaio (15-1) had no problems winning another game on Friday. This time they crushed fifth ranked Santo Andre (8-8) in Sampaio Basquete 78-53. Sampaio outrebounded Santo Andre 49-33 including 19 on the offensive glass. The former international center Monique Soares (190-1996) notched a double-double by scoring 10 points and 10 rebounds to lead the effort and Colombian guard Manuela Rios (163-1997) supported her with 12 points and 7 assists. Sampaio's coach felt very confident using 11 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Even 6 points and 12 rebounds by the former international center Clarissa Dos Santos (188-1988) did not help to save the game for Santo Andre. Forward Luana Batista (178-1991) added 8 points and 6 rebounds for the guests. Sampaio maintains first position with 15-1 record. Loser Santo Andre keeps the fifth place with eight games lost. Sampaio will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Santo Andre will play against Cerrado (#4) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Salvador - Sao Jose 40-101

Very expected game when 10th ranked Salvador (1-15) was smashed at home by sixth ranked Sao Jose (8-9) 101-40 on Friday. Sao Jose dominated down low during the game scoring 62 of its points in the paint compared to Salvador's 22. Sao Jose forced 45 Salvador turnovers. Strangely Salvador outrebounded Sao Jose 38-20 including 26 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists comparing to just 8 passes made by Salvador's players. Forward Ibukunoluwa Awe (179-1998) notched 17 points to lead the effort and guard Rayane De Freitas (173-1997) supported her with 13 points and 4 assists. Four Sao Jose players scored in double figures. Even 18 points by forward Maria De Souza (168-2003) did not help to save the game for Salvador. Center Lorraine Silva (183-1994) added 6 points and 11 rebounds for the hosts. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Sao Jose maintains sixth position with 8-9 record. Salvador lost twelfth consecutive game. Newly promoted team stay at the bottom place with 15 games lost. Sao Jose will meet at home Maringa (#8) in the next round. Salvador will have a break next round.
