Cuba - Puerto Rico 85-67
Cuba defended Gold medal on Centrobasket Championship 2008 in Puerto Rico . Cubans demonstrated the highest basketball level on the championship beating very inconvenient hosts thanks to well played last stanza. Important thing for both teams is that they already qualified for the FIBA Americas Championship 2009. First bigger lead in this final Cuba made in the second stanza. After plus two, which they created in first period, Cubans extended lead to 43-32 during the next ten minutes. After the breather Puerto Ricans surprised the defending champion with their quickness and aggressiveness at the both ends of the court. Cynthia Valentin (173-G-84, agency: LBM Management, college: Indiana) started to make shots while Lindsay Gonzalez (160-G-82) done the same. However, the hosts come closer but it seemed that Cuba will never let them to make a turn. Cubans showed their real power in the crucial ten minutes of the championship totally smashing Puerto Rico 25-10. Actually with 3 minutes remaining in the game Puerto Rico was down just 4 points but then Cuba put into the fifth gear finishing this game in style.
Yakelin Plutin (186-F-79) led her team to another Gold recording double-double, 26 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists. Oyanaisis Gelis (171-G-83) had 12 points while Marlen Cepeda (193-C-85) and Suchitel Avila (183-F-82) netted 11 points each. The hosts of Centrobasket 2008 got 22 points from Cynthia Valentin, who was the best player of her team during the entire championship. Lindsay Gonzalez added 18 while Esmary Vargas (191-C-81, agency: Next Level, college: Emporia St.) stopped on 10 points.
