CIBACOPA Round 12 (Regular Season): Culiacan defeat Tijuana

CIBACOPA is at the halfway of the Regular Season and there are still another 12 rounds left. Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

The most surprising game was another loss of top-ranked Tijuana Zonkeys (11-7) on the court of ninth ranked Caballeros de Culiacan on Saturday night. Visitors were defeated by Caballeros de Culiacan 91-83. American players dominated the game. It was a good game for point guard Roddy Peters (193-1995, college: Nicholls) who led his team to a victory with 23 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists. Power forward Torren Jones (206-1994, college: William Penn) contributed with 16 points and 10 rebounds for the winners. Guard Drew Buggs (190-1997, college: Winthrop) replied with 21 points and 9 assists for Tijuana. Tijuana Zonkeys' coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Caballeros de Culiacan have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to eighth place, which they share with Hermosillo. Tijuana at the other side still keeps top position with seven games lost. Culiacan is looking forward to face league's second-placed Astros in Guadalajara in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Tijuana will play on the road against Frayles in Guasave and is hoping to win this game.
Important game to mention about took place in Culiacan. Ninth ranked Caballeros de Culiacan (6-10) saved a 2-point victory at home edging top-ranked Tijuana Zonkeys (11-7) 90-88 on Sunday evening. It was quite big embarassment for the guest team. Worth to mention a great performance of American point guard Roddy Peters (193-1995, college: Nicholls) who helped to win the game recording 20 points and 9 assists (went 8 for 8 at the free throw line) and Tre McCallum who added 22 points during the contest. The best for the losing side was American forward Jaquan Lightfoot (203, college: Southeastern) with a double-double by scoring 13 points and 11 rebounds. Tijuana Zonkeys' coach tested ten players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Caballeros de Culiacan have a solid three-game winning streak. A very close game took place in Guadalajara between Astros and Toros. Top-ranked Astros (10-0) got a very close home victory over 4th ranked Toros (9-7). Astros managed to escape with a 1-point win 88-87 on Saturday evening. The winners were led by Chris Perry who scored that evening 20 points (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field). Even 24 points by Rashad James did not help to save the game for Toros. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Undefeated Astros have an impressive ten-game winning streak. They moved-up to second place. Loser Toros keep the fourth position with seven games lost. They share it with Frayles. Astros will meet at home Culiacan (#8) in the next round where they are favorite. Toros will play against Angeles (#6) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

There were no big surprises in other games of round 12: Frayles smashed Obregon on the road 114-92. Los Mochis won against Guaymas on its own court 95-89. Guaymas managed to outperform Los Mochis in a road game 100-93. Angeles managed to beat Hermosillo at home 93-90. Frayles were defeated by Obregon on the opponent's court 94-76. Astros beat Toros in a home game 93-75. Hermosillo lost to Angeles on the road 90-93.
The most impressive performance of 12th round was 23 points by Cameron Gooden of Hermosillo.



Obregon - Frayles 92-114

The game between closely ranked teams ended with third ranked Frayles de Guasave's (9-7) road victory over one of their biggest challengers Halcones de Ciudad Obregon (10-6) 114-92 on Friday. Frayles shot the lights out from three sinking 17 long-distance shots on high 58.6 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. The winners were led by American-South Sudanese forward Jay Pal (206-2000, college: SDSU, agency: JCK Sports Group) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 28 points and 11 rebounds (perfect from downtown making all five shots) and American point guard Saeed Nelson (188-1998, college: American) supported him with 23 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Even a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds by American guard Davonte Gaines (201-2000, college: Providence) did not help to save the game for Obregon. His fellow American import guard Jaden House (193, college: URI) added 17 points and 5 rebounds. Four Frayles and five Obregon players scored in double figures. Halcones de Ciudad Obregon's coach gave up on the game allowing to play eleven players seeing no chance for a win. Despite that victory Frayles went down to fourth position due to points difference, which they share with Toros. Obregon lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the third place with six games lost. Frayles will meet at home league's leader Tijuana in the next round and it may be the game of the week. Obregon will have a break next round.

Very expected game when 10th ranked Ostioneros de Guaymas (5-11) lost on the road to sixth ranked Pioneros Los Mochis (8-8) 95-89 on Friday. However just six-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. Los Mochis dominated down low during the game scoring 68 of its points in the paint compared to Ostioneros de Guaymas' 48. Los Mochis looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. American players dominated also this game. The winners were led by center Arnett Moultrie (208-1990, college: MSU) who scored that evening 35 points (!!!) and 8 rebounds (on 16-of-19 shooting from the field) and guard Matthew Butler (188-1995, college: UT Martin) supported him with 14 points and 9 assists. Ostioneros de Guaymas' coach used an eleven-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games.
