LPB Round 9: Atletico lose to Halcones

Top ranked Atletico (12-3) recorded its third loss in Panama City on Thursday night. Hosts were defeated by fourth ranked Halcones (7-8) 77-64. Halcones dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Atletico's 38. They outrebounded Atletico 45-25 including a 30-18 advantage in defensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was guard Bryan Waithe (188-1994, college: Lindenwood) who scored 17 points and 8 rebounds. Center Federico Barrera (206-1985) chipped in 12 points and 6 rebounds. At the other side the best for losing team was Jonathan King (193-1990, college: ACU) who recorded 21 points and 4 assists. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Newly promoted Halcones maintains fourth place with 7-8 record, which they share with Centinelas. Atletico at the other side still keeps top position with three games lost.
Very important is a home loss of second ranked Lobos (9-6) against fifth ranked Centinelas (7-8) on Saturday night. Host Lobos were defeated by Centinelas in 100-87. It was a good game for Lucas Chavez (187-1995) who led his team to a victory with a triple-double by scoring 27 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. Antonio Austin contributed with 33 points (!!!), 6 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. Costa Rican Victor Arias (197-1995) answered with a double-double by scoring 20 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists for Lobos. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Centinelas moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Halcones. Lobos at the other side, also newcomer in the league, keep the second position with six games lost. They share it with Caballos.
An exciting game was played in Aguadulce. Third ranked Caballos faced second-best Lobos. Host Caballos (9-6) smashed guests from (9-6) 87-67. Carlos Rodriguez stepped up and scored 17 points and 6 assists for the winners. The best for the losing side was Daniel Shedden with 24 points and 5 rebounds. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Caballos have a solid series of three victories in a row. They moved-up to second place, which they share with defeated Lobos.

Other games of round 9 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
Centinelas were defeated by Atletico Nacional in Panama City 84-75. Bottom-ranked Universitarios were beaten by Caballos at home 69-86. Bottom-ranked Universitarios were destroyed by Halcones on the opponent's court 90-65.
The best stats of 9th round was 17 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists by Carlos Ibarra of Universitarios.



Atletico Nacional - Centinelas 84-75

There was no surprise in Panama City where 5th ranked Centinelas (7-8) were defeated by first ranked Atletico (12-3) 84-75 on Tuesday. Atletico looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. Jonathan King (193-1990, college: ACU) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 18 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners and naturalized American Adalberto Rojas (200-1986) chipped in 25 points. Four Atletico players scored in double figures. Atletico's coach used an eleven-player rotation saving starting five for next games. The best for the losing side was Lucas Chavez (187-1995) with 21 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists and Serbian power forward Milos Petkovic (204-1991) produced a double-double by scoring 10 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists. Atletico maintains first place with 12-3 record. Newly promoted Centinelas dropped to the fourth position with eight games lost. They share it with Halcones.

Caballos looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. Carlos Rodriguez stepped up and scored 20 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners and swingman Jose Montenegro (191-1998) chipped in 17 points and 5 rebounds. Caballos' coach used an eleven-player rotation saving starting five for next games. The best for the losing side was point guard Jeff Montenegro (180) with 17 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists and point guard Carlos Ibarra (170-1995) scored 9 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists. Caballos have a solid series of three victories in a row. They moved-up to second place, which they share with Lobos. Universitarios lost thirteenth consecutive game. They stay at the bottom position with 14 games lost.

Four Caballos players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was Costa Rican swingman Daniel Shedden (191-1996, college: MSUB) with 24 points and 5 rebounds and Oscar Zephyrine (193-2000) scored 17 points. Very important is a home loss of second ranked Lobos (9-6) against fifth ranked Centinelas (7-8) on Saturday night. Host Lobos were defeated by Centinelas in 100-87. They outrebounded Lobos 45-31 including 30 on the defensive glass. Centinelas players were unselfish on offense dishing 25 assists. It was a good game for Lucas Chavez (187-1995) who led his team to a victory with a triple-double by scoring 27 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. American Antonio Austin (196-1991, college: SDCC) contributed with 33 points (!!!), 6 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. Austin is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Four Centinelas players scored in double figures. Costa Rican Victor Arias (197-1995) answered with a double-double by scoring 20 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists and Costa Rican swingman Daniel Shedden (191-1996, college: MSUB) added 18 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists in the effort for Lobos. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Centinelas moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Halcones. Lobos at the other side, also newcomer in the league, keep the second position with six games lost. They share it with Caballos.

Four Halcones players scored in double figures. Halcones' coach felt very confident that he used entire bench and allowed the starting five to get some rest. The best for the losing side was point guard Jeff Montenegro (180) with 17 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists and point guard Carlos Ibarra (170-1995) scored 17 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists.
