Championship game
Brazil - Argentina 84:67 Brazilian National team claimed the South American Championship title
for the 22nd time. Yesterday they overcame Argentina in the Final in Loja,
Ecuador to take the crown for the 12th straight time. Argentina grabbed silver
medals for the 11th time in the history. Brazil already edged their Latin
American archrivals in the preliminary round and looked forward to repeating the
success. However Las Gigantes jumped to an early lead. They dominated in the
first period and drove to a 19:16 lead after it. Brazil quickly adjusted their
rhythm and outscored their opponents 27:7 in the second stanza to accumulate a
43:26 lead at halftime. Brazil kept Argentina at bay throughout the third term
entering the final term with a 17 - point cushion. Argentina could not challenge
the deficit in the final quarter. Brazil secured the distance and cruised to an
overall win at the end.
Karla da Costa (173 - G - 78) provided 20 points to lead Brazil.
Chuca Ferreira (180 - F/G - 79) notched 17 points, while
Claudia Das Neves (172 - G - 75) dropped 14 points and dished out 6 assists for
the winners.
Florencia Fernandez (190 - C - 86) knocked down 23 points to lead all scorers.
Erica Sanchez (182 - F/C - 76) added 19 points in a losing effort. Both teams
qualified for the FIBA Americas Championship 2009 in Brazil.
Venezuela - Chile 72:91
Chile celebrated their third and most important win at the South American
Championship. They defeated Venezuela in the Bronze medals game and clinched the
third overall spot at the tournament. Chile thus advanced to the FIBA Americas
championship to be held in Brazil in 2009. Chilean team repeated their success
of 2001 and 2003 seasons when they also claimed the Bronze medals at the event.
Venezuela grabbed the Bronze medals in 1999.
South American Championship. Day 5 - May. 29, 2008
Brazil - Chile 100:55
The South American Championship reached its final stages. Yesterday the teams
completed the preliminary round with four of them qualifying for the next stage.
Brazil marched through the preliminary games untamed posting five straight
victories and ensuring their birth in the Final. In the last round of action
Brazilian team faced Chile and drove to a confident 100:55 victory. Brazil got
to a usual unhurried start. Chile kept it within striking distance and trailed
by just 6 points after the starting frame. But the things returned to expected
as Brazil raised the tempo and easily ran away to a 50:26 distance at halftime.
Chile however never collapsed and challenged their opponents in the third term.
The teams exchanged the blows and Brazil narrowly outgunned the counterparts.
But the intensity abated in the final quarter and Brazil finalized a comfortable
win at the end.
Chuca Ferreira (180 - F/G - 79) knocked down 20 points and pulled down 5 boards
to pace Brazil.
Karla da Costa (173 - G - 78) led all scorers with 23 points.

their archrivals Argentina in the Final tonight. Chile will fight against
Venezuela for the last available ticket to FIBA Americas Championship 2009.
Argentina - Venezuela 108:77
Argentinean team completed their preliminary campaign at the South American
Championship in Loja in style. They routed Venezuela and secured their spot in
the tournament's title game. Thus Argentina booked the spot in the FIBA America
Championship 2009 to be held in Brazil. Las Gigantes opened the game confidently
scoring 31 points in the first frame and accumulating an 8 - point lead. The
high - scoring game continued in the second period as Argentina stretched the lead
to 12 points while the teams combined for 110 points by halftime. However
Argentinean players accentuated the defense in the third period and held their
opponents to 12 points. It allowed Las Gigantes to clear off to a 31 - point
distance. Venezuela never recovered in the final term and suffered a bitter
loss. They will now have to fight for the FIBA Americas Championship ticket in
the game against Chile later today.
Erica Sanchez (182 - F/C - 76) led all scorers with 21 points.
Stephany Thomas (179 - F - 89) poured in 17 points, while
Veronica Soberon (177 - G/F - 77) provided 15 for the winners.

Natalia Burian (163 - G - 84) scored 13 points, while

Cleider Blanco ( - C - 90) answered with 12 points for Venezuela. Padilla had 8
points in a losing case. Brazil will face Chile in the last round of the
preliminary stage today. Venezuela will play against Argentina.
Argentina - Colombia 89:43 Argentinean team rebounded quickly after a bitter loss to Brazil to
come firing from all guns against Colombia on the fourth day of action at the
South American Championship. They faced Colombia and left their opponents not a
mere chance to succeed in this one. Argentina dominated right from the start and
built a 28:7 lead after the starting period. The shots kept pouring in from all
possible ranges as Argentina continued to march towards impressive victory. They
enjoyed an insurmountable 37 - point buffer before the fourth term and eased to
the victory in the final term.

Brazil - Venezuela 106:40
Brazilian National team cruised past Venezuela on the fourth day of action at
the South American Championship for Women in Loja. Thus Brazil registered their
4th straight win and sealed the top spot in the preliminary round. Both teams
entered the game undefeated and Venezuela hoped to come up with one of the
biggest upsets of the tournament. But the defending champions easily surpassed
ambitious rivals. They held Venezuela to only 7 points in the starting frame and
jumped to a 23:7 advantage after ten minutes of action. Venezuela struggled
defensively as Brazilian players easily penetrated under the rim. They accounted
for 30 points in the second stanza and enjoyed massive 53:13 lead at halftime.
The things hardly changed for Venezuela after the long break. The onslaught
continued as Brazil outscored their counterparts 28:11 and 25:16 in the third
and fourth terms respectively.
South American Championship. Day 3 - May. 27, 2008
Brazil - Argentina 73:67
The South American Championship is in its full swing with the most anticipated
games being played. Yesterday the main favorites Brazil and Argentina faced each
other in Round 3 showdown. The defending champions celebrated a tough victory to
remain at the top of the ladder. However Argentina started the game more
successfully and jumped to an early lead. Carolina
Erica Sanchez (182 - F/C - 76) paced Argentinean side to a 28:19 lead at the end
of the first stanza. However Brazil struck right back.
Karen Rocha (177 - G - 84) and
Chuca Ferreira (180 - F/G - 79) came off the bench to ignite a massive 26:10 run
from Brazilian team. It allowed the reigning champions to accumulate a 7 - point
advantage at halftime. Brazil played a stifling defense at the moment and
Argentina struggled to get things rolling. Brazilian bench players overwhelmed
their counterparts and keeping Brazil in front throughout the third stanza. They
stretched the gap to 11 points before the final frame. Argentina finally broke
the deadlock in the fourth term cutting the margin to 5 points but Brazil
withstood all comeback efforts from their opponents to register the third
straight win at the tournament.
Chuca Ferreira scored 21 points to lead all scorers.
Karen Rocha knocked down 16 points in a winning case.
Erica Sanchez answered with 17 points for Argentina.
Maria Landra (188 - F - 83) canned 11 points in defeat. Argentina will next take
on Colombia today. Brazil will face Venezuela in the fourth round.
Ecuador - Venezuela 76 - 89
Venezuela drove to their third straight win and consolidated the top spot in the
ladder. They will clash with Brazil in the top - shelf battle later tonight.
Chile - Colombia 77:56
Chile celebrated a key win in the pursuit for the spot in the top 4. They also
revenged for a bitter loss to Colombia in the Bronze medals game in 2006. The
teams are fighting for three tickets to the FIBA Americas Championship in 2009.
Chile now has strong chances of finishing in the top 4 pool to play for possible
qualification.

Brazil - Colombia 100:47
Brazilian team continued to roll confidently at the South American Championship
in Loja, Ecuador. In the second round of the competition Brazil faced winless
Colombia. The teams played evenly only in the first frame. Colombian team
managed to keep it close and trailed by just 6 points after the opening period.
However the things quickly turned the other way in the second period. Brazil
limited their opponents to 7 points in the frame and stretched the advantage to
18 points.
Paulo Bassul tried different players on the court but it never influenced the
outcome. Brazilian players accounted for 33 points in the third period and
cleared off to insurmountable 38 points before the fourth term. Colombia
struggled to find the right rhythm and had to suffer the second defeat at the
tournament. Brazil routed their opponents and remained at the top of the ladder
together with Argentina and Venezuela.
Soeli Garvao (187 - C - 77) notched 18 points and 7 boards to pace Brazil.
Karla da Costa (173 - G - 78) had 17 points, while
Chuca Ferreira (180 - F/G - 79) contributed 14 points for the winners. Londono
answered with 10 points for Colombia. Elena Lopez delivered 9 points in a losing
case. Brazil will take on Argentina in todays top - shelf battle.
Ecuador - Argentina 46:98
Argentina continued their winning streak at the South American Championship.
Hosting Ecuador became the second victim of the Argentinean squad falling short
yesterday. The tournaments favorites marked their dominance right from the
start. Argentina jumped ahead and rolled to a comfortable 30:11 lead after the
opening stanza. The teams slowed down in the second term teaming up for just 15
points but it still allowed Argentina to stretch the gap to 24 points at the
interval.
Stephany Thomas (179 - F - 89) ignited another rally from Argentinean squad as
they mounted the pressure and drove to a 66:33 advantage at three quarter time.
Ecuador could not outscore Argentina in the final period and the favorites
posted their second straight win.
Stephany Thomas nailed 16 points to lead Argentina.
Veronica Soberon (177 - G/F - 77) and
Marcela Paoletta (170 - G - 79) provided 14 points apiece for the winners.
Argentina improved on their free throw shooting which was woeful in the starting
game. The team shot only 45% against Chile but managed 68% against Ecuador.
Susana Jara ( - 80) answered with 14 points for Ecuador.
Maria Espinoza ( - 83) knocked down 8 points as Ecuador fell to 0 - 2 record.
Argentina will take on Brazil later tonight. Ecuador will seek for the initial
victory against Venezuela.

Franciele Nacimiento (187 - F/C - 87) and
Micaela Jacintho (180 - F - 79) paced Brazilian team as they outgunned Ecuador
24:10 in the second frame to pile up a 17 - point advantage at halftime. Brazil
kept firing on all cylinders in the second half as they kept Ecuador at bay.
Brazil easily rolled to a confident start of their South American championship
campaign and topped the preliminary group.
Micaela Jacintho led all scorers with 17 points.
Franciele Nacimiento added 15 points and 7 boards, while
Jacqueline Silvestre (178 - F - 86) scored 11 points in a winning case.
Maria Espinoza ( - 83) and
Maria Tobar ( - 71) answered with 14 points apiece for Ecuador.
Susana Jara ( - 80) knocked down 8 points in defeat. Brazil will now face
Colombia in the second round of action. Ecuador will oppose Argentina later
tonight.
Argentina - Chile 95:63 Argentinean team opened the South American championship for Women with
victory. On the first day of the action the Latin American powerhouse toppled
Chile. Argentina got to an aggressive start of the game and quickly posted a
double digit lead. Chile struggled to pass tight Argentinean defense and scored
just 10 points in the starting frame. Argentina meanwhile accounted for 28
points and appeared comfortably ahead. However
Paola Naranjo (182 - F/C - 78) paced Chile in the second stanza and they
gradually evened the tempo. The teams traded the baskets throughout the second
period and Chilean side capped the second quarter outscoring their opponents
18:16. But that was just a short moment of good performance for Chile. Argentina
quickly rebounded and struck back right after the break. They cruised in the sec

Barquisimeto, Venezuela. - The Venezuelan
Women National Team traveled to Loja, Ecuador, to play in the 2008 South
American Championship from May 24th till the 30th against seven other countries,
in an attempt to secure one of the three available tickets to the FIBA Americas
World Cup Qualy Tournament and try to make it to a FIBA Americas Women World Cup
for the first time in the history of the country.
Coach Enrique Gil and his assistant, Oscar Velasquez, will use
Maria Villarroel (174 - G - 78, college:
Oklahoma),
player of Sierre Basket in Switzerland, as their main star and offensive weapon.
She'll have plenty of company with NCAA players
Yesi Castillo (175 - F, college:
E.Oklahoma St. JC) and
Ivaney Marquez ( - 83), followed by Jofranny Guerra and Veronica Hernandez,
who just finished playing in a semi pro league in Ecuador as imported players.
The rest of the team is formed by members of the U19 squad that won the South
American gold medal last year in Ecuador and that are going to play in the FIBA
Americas U19 World Cup Qualy Tournament in Argentina, later this year. They are

finished in second place.
In preparation for this tournament, Venezuela defeated Trinidad and Tobago and
Cuba while in concentration back home, in the city of San Juan de los Morros,
Guarico. The team has a 20 year - old average but the handicap is their low
height, stated at 1.75m in average.
Day 5 - Aug. 6, 2006
Brazil dominated Argentina 91 - 62 in the 2006 South
American Championship for Women played in Asuncion, Paraguay.Brazil won the game
with pressure on the defensive side and a balanced offense led by Helen Luz who
had 18 points. Colombia ended third as they defeated Chile 89 - 82 with 29 points
by Yaneth Arias and 15 by Elena Diaz.

The 28 - 4 run in the fourth quarter helped Brazil win the final game with
Argentina. Brazil accelerated the rhythm, Argentina can抰 adapt the aggressive
way of competition and collapsed drastically. Brazil out - rebounded Argentina
51 - 21. It helped Brazil get more chance to shoot the ball. Brazil 2P percentage
is 58% and Argentina only 37%.

Colombia walked out the shadow of losing with Brazil yesterday promptly.
Although Chile led most of the stats, too many turnovers prevented them winning
the game. Colombia took advantage of their stable exertion, kept the score
advantage to the end.
Day 3 - Aug. 4, 2006
On the third day of the South American Championship for
Women, Argentina defeated Paraguay 89 - 62 to end the preliminary round play.
Argentina won the first quarter 23 - 8 to cruise into the semifinals.
Natalia Rios (175 - G - 80) (175 - G - 80) led the winners with 17 points while
Paola Ferrari ( - G/F - 85) scored 28 in a losing cause.
In the other game of Group B, Colombia defeated Bolivia 76 - 61. Yenni Pinilla
scored 24 points for Colombia. Jenny Vaca led Bolivia 14 points
In Group A, Chile crushed Peru 91 - 52.
Paola Naranjo ( - F/C - 78) had 23 points, while
Ziomara Morrrison ( - 88) chipped 18.
Karina Figueroa (173 - G - 86) is the only one who scored double figures in Peru
14 points.
In the other game of Group A, Brazil crushed Venezuela 115 - 40 with 34 points
from Erika. Kelly Da Silva and Micaela Martins each scored 16 points. Ofelia
Villarroel led Venezuela with 11 points.
Brazil and Colombia are in the first two places in Group A, while Argentina and
Chile are in Group B.
Day 4 - Aug. 4, 2006
Brazil defeated Colombia 84 - 41 and Argentina crushed Chile 88 - 67 to pass to
the Gold medal game in the South American Championship for Women played in
Paraguay. In the fifth place game, Venezuela defeated Paraguay 79 - 69. In the
seventh game, Bolivia defeated Peru 79 - 74.

Brazil took advantage of their whole strength, controlled the game from start to
the end. The aggressive defense restricted Colombia's percentage nearly 20%.
Brazil out - rebounded Colombia 49 - 22. In assist, Brazil 27 and Colombia only 4.

Argentina took the 24 points advantage into the second half. Argentina seemed to
be prepared for the finals and didn't put 100% energy into the rest of the game.
They didn't expand the advantage ulteriorly. Argentina's 21 steals led to
Chile's 22 turnovers directly.

On the second day of the South American Championship for Women, Colombia
defeated Paraguay 81 - 73. Yaneth Arias (188 - F - 82) led Colombia with 28 points and 18 rebounds. In a
losing cause Paola Ferrari had 25 points. Both teams are now 1 - 1 in the
standings.
In the other game of Group B, Argentina defeated Bolivia 105 - 38. The
Argentineans won the first quarter 26 - 6 to cruise for their second win. Cecilia
Lineira and
Natalia Rios (175 - G - 80) had 14 each. Paola Zarate led Bolivia with 10
points.
In Group A, Brazil dominated Chile 112 - 47.
Kelly Santos (192 - C - 80) netted 20 points while Micaela Martins added 19
points for Brazil.
Valentina Aragonese ( - F - 79) scored 11 points.
In the other game of Group A, Venezuela defeated Peru 86 - 68. Maria Villaroel had
24 points while
Janeth Castillo ( - 70) added 18 in the win.
Maria Villanueva was the best scorer with 21 points, Kelly Garrido added 13

In the other game of Group A, Chile edged Venezuela 90 - 85. It was the most
interesting and closed game in day 1.
