Argentina thumped Venezuela to register the first win in Group A. Argentina jumped off to a 39-21 halftime lead. They held Venezuela to just 23 points in the second half to breeze to the win. Luciana Delabarba (167-PG-1997) had 17 points, while Andrea Boquete (183-SF-1990) contributed 14 points for the home team. Mariana Duran (172-PG-1993, college: Okla City) knocked down 9 points for Venezuela.
Ecuador - Paraguay 52-57
Paraguay outscored Ecuador for the first win in Group A. Paraguay went on an 18-11 run in the second period to open a 33-26 halftime lead. They protected it well throughout the second half and raced to the victory. Paola Ferrari (178-G/F-1985, college: Union, TN) stepped up with 22 points and 7 rebounds for Paraguay. Blanca Quinonez chipped in 18 points for Ecuador.
Chile - Uruguay 55-43
Chile held off Uruguay in the opener. Fernanda Ovalle (183-G/F-2003) scored 16 points and grabbed 8 rebounds to pace the winners. Uruguay led by four points after ten minutes. But Chile used a strong 22-11 run in the fourth period to snatch the victory. Constanza Cardenas (185-C-1998) had 8 points and 13 rebounds for the winners. Florencia Niski (165-PG-2002) answered with 11 points for Uruguay.
Brazil - Colombia 74-45
Brazil cruised past Colombia for the opening victory at the championship. Brazil dominated from start to finish. They posted a 40-21 halftime lead. They sank 34 points in the second half and raced to the win. Leila Zabani (181-G/F-1991) stepped up with 12 points, while Kamilla Soares (201-C-2001) added 10 points and 12 boards for Brazil. Mabel Martinez (180-F-1986) answered with 8 points for Colombia.
