LUB Round 16 (Regular Season): Aguada top Bigua in a derby game

The most interesting game was a derby match between two local teams from Montevideo: Aguada (#5) and Bigua (#7). Aguada (9-5) won against visiting Bigua (8-7) 95-87. Aguada looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. American Donald Sims (190-1987, college: App State, agency: Pensack Sports) fired 27 points and 7 assists for the winners. Guard Santiago Vidal (180-1989) chipped in 7 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. American point guard Deshone Hicks (178-1999, college: Ferrum) produced 20 points and 5 assists for lost side. Aguada moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Hebraica. Bigua at the other side keeps the seventh position with seven games lost.
Leader Penarol delivered the thirteenth victory. This time they crushed 11th ranked Cordon (2-13) 77-58 in Montevideo. Worth to mention a great performance of naturalized Italian swingman Nicola Pomoli (195-1999) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 10 points, 5 rebounds, 12 assists and 4 steals. Emiliano Serres contributed with 16 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. American guard Addison Spruill (195-1993, college: UNCW) replied with 15 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists for Cordon. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Penarol (13-1) have an impressive seven-game winning streak. They maintain first position. Cordon lost eighth consecutive game. They keep the eleventh place with 13 games lost.
We should mention about the upset which took place in Montevideo, where higher ranked Defensor (8-6) lost to tenth ranked Goes (4-11) in a road game 92-99 on Monday. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Defensor. Worth to mention a great performance of Manuel Oyenard who helped to win the game recording 21 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. At the losing side Elijah Weaver responded with 26 points and 4 assists. Defensor's coach Gonzalo Brea Rey rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Newly promoted Goes maintains tenth position with 4-11 record. Loser Defensor keeps the sixth place with six games lost.

In the last two games of round 16 bottom-ranked Welcome was defeated by U.Atletica in Montevideo 91-75. Nacional smashed Welcome at home 120-91.

There was no surprise in Montevideo where 12th ranked Welcome (1-14) was defeated by ninth ranked U.Atletica (6-9) 91-75 on Thursday. U.Atletica outrebounded Welcome 48-26 including a 34-21 advantage in defensive rebounds. Worth to mention a great performance of American forward Ty Prince (198-1999, college: UMHB) who helped to win the game recording 27 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists and the other American import power forward Quatarrius Wilson (203-1996, college: SEMO, agency: One Motive Sports) who added 23 points and 7 rebounds during the contest. At the losing side forward Santiago Moglia (196-1989) responded with 20 points and 4 assists and American power forward Rashad Hassan (203-1989, college: SSU) scored 23 points (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field). Nacional dominated down low during the game scoring 76 of its points in the paint compared to Welcome's 48. Nacional forced 25 Welcome turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 34 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of American forward Connor Zinaich (201-1997, college: Nova SE) who helped to win the game recording 24 points (on 10-of-11 shooting from the field) and Panamanian power forward Ernesto Oglivie (203-1989) who added 15 points (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field) during the contest. Five Nacional players scored in double figures. Nacional's coach Alvaro Ponce felt very confident that he used entire bench and allowed the starting five to rest.
