SPB Round 32: Guaros are upset by Brillantes- May 17, 2023
The Regular Season in SPB is slowly approaching the end. But there may be still some important changes in the final standings in the last 3 rounds. Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.
Heroes - Centauros 64-53 The game between closely ranked teams ended with 6th ranked Centauros' (10-15) road loss to fifth ranked Heroes (12-12) 53-64 on Monday. Heroes outrebounded Centauros 50-28 including a 18-7 advantage in offensive rebounds. Worth to mention a great performance of British center Kavell Bigby-Williams (211-1995, college: LSU) who helped to win the game recording 12 points and 9 rebounds and Dominican point guard Richard Bautista (185-1997) who added 8 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists during the contest. American point guard Quade Green (183-1998, college: Washington, agency: Octagon Europe) responded with 25 points and 5 assists and Spanish-Dominican power forward Jhonatan Araujo (206-1996) produced a double-double by scoring 13 points and 10 rebounds. Both coaches tested many bench players saving starting five for next games. Heroes maintains fifth position with 12-12 record. Centauros lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the sixth place with 15 games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest. Second ranked Cocodrilos (17-7) played at the court of 7th ranked Gigantes (8-15). Cocodrilos did not have too big problems and got a relatively easy victory 91-71. Cocodrilos had a 34-20 advantage in offensive rebounds. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 26 assists comparing to just 12 passes made by Gigantes' players. The former international forward Luis Bethelmy (200-1986) orchestrated the victory by scoring 22 points and 9 rebounds. Dominican Luis Montero (203-1993, college: South Plains) contributed with a double-double by scoring 16 points, 6 rebounds and 11 assists for the winners. American forward Jamison Elder (196-1998, college: Shawnee St.) replied with 17 points and American-Puerto Rican forward Jonathan Ocasio (196-1992, college: New Haven) added 12 points and 7 rebounds in the effort for Gigantes. Both coaches used bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Cocodrilos maintains second position with 17-7 record having just two points less than leader Gladiadores. Gigantes lost third consecutive game. They keep the seventh place with 15 games lost. Cocodrilos' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Caracas Spartans. Fourth ranked Piratas (15-7) played at the court of 6th ranked Panteras (11-13). Piratas did not have too big problems and got a relatively easy victory 96-79 on Monday. Piratas looked well-organized offensively handing out 27 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of Dominican Rigoberto Mendoza (190-1992) who helped to win the game recording 16 points and 4 steals and the former international center Javinger Vargas (202-1990) who added 14 points and 6 rebounds during the contest. Greek guard Vangelis Mantzaris (196-1990) responded with 11 points and 6 assists and Jhonatan Acosta (197-1996) scored 11 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Five Piratas and four Panteras players scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players saving starting five for next games. Piratas moved-up to third place. Panteras lost third consecutive game. They keep the sixth position with 13 games lost. Piratas will meet at home Marinos (#8) in the next round where they are favorite. Panteras will play against Gigantes and it may be a tough game between close rivals. Broncos dominated down low during the game scoring 70 of its points in the paint compared to Taurinos' 32 and made 16-of-20 free shots (80.0 percent) during the game. Broncos forced 21 Taurinos turnovers and outrebounded them 50-35 including a 32-21 advantage in defensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 32 assists comparing to just 9 passes made by Taurinos' players. Worth to mention a great performance of the former international forward Juan Coronado (203-1990, college: Liberty) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 18 points and 14 rebounds and American Erik McCree (202-1993, college: Louisiana Tech, agency: Pensack Sports) who added 17 points and 4 assists during the contest. Four Broncos players scored in double figures. Broncos' coach Nestor Garcia felt very confident that he used 11 players and allowed the starting five to get some rest. Forward Jhonder Gomez (196-2002) responded with a double-double by scoring 27 points and 14 rebounds and Jorge Querales scored 13 points and 7 rebounds. Broncos maintains third position with 18-7 record behind leader Gladiadores. Taurinos lost ninth consecutive game. They keep the ninth place with 19 games lost. They share the position with Diablos. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest. Guaros were defeated by Brillantes in a tough game on the road 74-80. It ended at the same time the eight-game winning streak of Guaros. They outrebounded Guaros 49-27 including a 18-2 advantage in offensive rebounds. Brillantes looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. The best player for the winners was American forward Glen Rice Jr (198-1991, college: Georgia Tech) who had a double-double by scoring 11 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists. The other American import center Ricardo Glenn (203-1990, college: USC Upstate, agency: Interperformances) chipped in 21 points and 5 rebounds (perfect from the field making all eight shots !!!). Brillantes' coach Steve Walton used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American point guard Marvelle Harris (196-1993, college: Fresno St., agency: Slash Sports) produced 15 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists and American-Rwandan center Prince Ibeh (208-1994, college: Texas) added 12 points, 9 rebounds and 6 blocks respectively for the guests. Four Guaros players scored in double figures. Brillantes have a solid four-game winning streak. They maintain fourth position with 16-7 record. Guaros at the other side keep the second place with six games lost. Brillantes' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Caracas Llaneros. Worth to mention a great performance of Argentinian Salvador Giletto (195-1993) who helped to win the game recording 20 points and 8 rebounds and forward Jose Manaure (193-1987) who added 23 points during the contest. American-Nigerian center Danny Agbelese (203-1990, college: Hampton) responded with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 15 rebounds and forward Franger Pirela (187-2002) scored 15 points and 5 assists. Four Marinos players scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players in such tough game. Diablos moved-up to ninth place, which they share with Taurinos. Marinos lost third consecutive game. They keep the eighth position with 17 games lost. Diablos will meet at home Cangrejeros (#9) in the next round. Marinos will play against Piratas in La Guaira and hope to secure a win.
