Cuba - Dominican Republic 71-44
Cuba enter the Championship game of the Centrobasket 2014. The defending champions overcame Dominican Republic 71:44 and will take on Puerto Rico in the Final game. Moreover Cuba sealed a place at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto. Dominican Republic meanwhile will take on Virgin Islands int he game for the third place. Cuba allowed the opponents to score 10 points in the first and then the second quarters. They enjoyed a 38:20 half-time advantage and easily led the game to the win. Cuba won the third period 9-6 and closed the game with a 24-18 rally. Oyanaisy Gelis (172-SG-83) stepped up with 13 points and Marlenis Cepeda (193-C-85) nailed 10. Yamara Amargo (179-PF-85) notched 9, whilst Anisleidy Galindo (179-SG-89) had 8. Jennifer Estrella (183-G-88) produced 13 points in defeat and Carmen Guzman (172-SG-85, agency: Merit Management Group, college: UAB) scored 7.
Puerto Rico - U.S. Virgin Islands 68-51
Puerto Rico sealed a place at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto as they won their Semifinal game of the Centrobasket. They posted a 68:51 win over Virgin Islands and will take on Cuba in the Final game. Virgin Islands will take on Dominican Republic in the game for the third place. Virgin Isalnds started better and finished the first quarter winning, 12-9. The team led by Batista Gerardo improved dramatically in the restart of the game and then went ahead 16-12. Puerto Rico managed to score 20 points in the third and then the last quarters for the final result. Carla Cortijo (172-G-87, agency: Gamble Sports Management, college: Texas) top-scored for the winners with 19 points and Sandra Garcia (190-C-90, college: Wake Forest) posted 16. Allison Gibson (180-G) and Yolanda Jones (184-F-84, college: La-Lafayette) followed them with 11 each. Tanecka Carey (175-G-91) nailed 14 points in a loss and Natalie Day (182-G/F-90, college: Portland) delivered 12.
5-8 Place
Jamaica - Costa Rica 81-40
Jamaica demolish Costa Rica in Monterrey at the Centrobasket 2014. Jamaica needed a comfortable 81:40 win and will play against Mexico for the 5th place tomorrow. Costa Rica meanwhile will take on El Salvador for the 7-8 places. Jamaica opened the game with a 17-4 surge and dominated the whole game after. They added a 23-9 rally in the second period and increased to 40:13 at the halftime. Moreover Jamaica posted a 17-15 run in the third quarter and finished the game with a 24-12 burst. Shereesha Richards (185-F-93) stepped up with 25 points and Jackson Simone notched 12. Tajay Ashmeade (190-C-89, agency: LBM Management, college: Seton Hall) produced 10, whilst Dixon Sasha had 8. Marielena Vargas (163-PG-81) ended up with 11 points in a loss and Natalia Galvez (170-G-85) brought 9.
Mexico - El Salvador 60-48
Mexico roll over El Salvador in the Classification Round of the Centrobasket 2014. The hosts of the tournament posted a 60:48 win and will take on Jamaica in the game for the 5th place tomorrow. El Salvador surprised the hosts with a 13-11 run in the opening period and added 12-9 rally in the second frame. The third period however was decisive in the game as Mexico erupted with a 23-7 surge and never looked behind after. Mexico finished the game with a 17-16 rally and sealed the victory. Casandra Asencio (180-SF) paced all the winners with 16 points and Sandra Sanchez (175-PF-90) nailed 14. Paola Estrada (172-G) scored 10, whilst Lara Myriam had 9. Hillary Martinez (172-SF-97) produced 24 points and Monica Escobar (178-F-94) had 13 in a loss.
