LNB Round 21 (Regular Season): Los Leones beat Colo Colo by two after a very close game

Seventh-ranked Colo Colo (9-12) was very close to win a game against first ranked Los Leones (19-2) in Quilpue on Thursday. Los Leones managed to secure only two-point victory 81-79. However their fans expected much easier game. It was a good game for the former international forward Darrol Jones (193-1994) who led his team to a victory with 11 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. American forward Jerry Evans (203-1990, college: Nevada) contributed with 16 points for the winners. American swingman Dennis McKinney (194-1998, college: Mt.Mercy) answered with 28 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists for Colo Colo. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Los Leones have a solid series of four victories in a row. Defending champion maintains first place with 19-2 record. Colo Colo at the other side keeps the seventh position with 12 games lost. Los Leones are looking forward to face Puente Alto (#6) on the road in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Colo Colo's supporters also look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Santiago Univ.Catolica.
Seventh-ranked Ancud (9-13) used its home court advantage to challenge third ranked Espanol (16-6). The visitors from Osorno managed to secure only three-point victory 70-67. However their fans expected much easier game. American players dominated the game. Forward Yahota Rasas (201-1999, college: PVAMU) stepped up and scored 24 points and 8 rebounds for the winners and DeAndre Daniels chipped in 23 points and 8 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field). The best for the losing side was forward Richard Granberry (203-1993, college: Virginia St.) with a double-double by scoring 22 points and 13 rebounds. Espanol maintains third place with 16-6 record having just two points less than leader Los Leones. Ancud lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the eighth position with 13 games lost. Espanol will play against Las Animas (#9) in Valdivia in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Ancud will play at home against Valdivia and hopes to get back on the winning track.
Very important is a road loss of second ranked Univ.Concepcion (18-4) against eleventh ranked Valdivia (5-17) on Friday night. Visiting Univ.Concepcion was defeated by Valdivia in a tough game in Valdivia 79-88. It ended at the same time the six-game winning streak of Univ.Concepcion. Erik Carrasco nailed 25 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists for the winning side. Diego Silva came up with a double-double by scoring 25 points, 5 rebounds and 10 assists for Univ.Concepcion in the defeat. Valdivia maintains eleventh place with 5-17 record. Loser Univ.Concepcion keeps the second position with four games lost. Valdivia will meet higher ranked Ancud (#8) on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Univ.Concepcion will play against Puerto Varas (#4) where they are definitely not considered as a favorite in this game either.

There were no big surprises in other games of round 21: Sportiva Italiana was smashed by Univ.Catolica on the road 86-66. Las Animas lost to Puerto Varas on its own court 71-83. Puente Alto unfortunately lost to Espanol in Talca 78-83. Sportiva Italiana lost to defending champion Los Leones at home 84-90.
The most impressive performance of 21th round was 39 points (!!!) and 8 rebounds by Devante Wallace of Sportiva Italiana.



Univ.Catolica - Sportiva Italiana 86-66

There was a surprise result when tenth ranked Univ.Catolica (8-14) crushed higher ranked Sportiva Italiana (13-9) in Santiago 86-66 on Thursday. Univ.Catolica forced 22 Sportiva Italiana turnovers. They shot the lights out from three sinking 12 long-distance shots on high 57.1 percentage. Univ.Catolica looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. American forward Randy Rickards (201-2000, college: WILMU) nailed 24 points and 7 rebounds for the winning side and naturalized Venezuelan forward Deiker Salcedo (181-2002) accounted for 12 points and 7 assists. Gaspar Hernandez (-1999) came up with 20 points and 7 rebounds and Argentinian power forward Federico Herrera (200-1993) added 9 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists respectively for Sportiva Italiana in the defeat. Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Univ.Catolica moved-up to ninth place, which they share with Las Animas. Sportiva Italiana lost fifth consecutive game. They keep the fifth position with nine games lost. Univ.Catolica's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Santiago to the arena Colo Colo.

Very expected game when 9th ranked Las Animas (8-14) lost to fourth ranked Puerto Varas (14-8) in Valdivia 71-83 on Thursday. Puerto Varas dominated down low during the game scoring 62 of its points in the paint compared to Las Animas' 28. American players dominated also this game. Forward Andrew Corum (201-1997, college: Virginia St.) nailed a double-double by scoring 18 points and 10 rebounds for the winning side and forward Joshua Morris (203-1993, college: UTPB) accounted for 12 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Five Puerto Varas players scored in double figures. Puerto Varas' coach Damian Gamarra used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games.
