SLB Round 16: Taurinos beat Indios by one after a very close game

There are only two more rounds left in the Regular Season in SLB. The fans could enjoy quite many interesting games in the last round. The round ended with derby games and favorites losing the games. Here is the last round review presented by ESL.

The most exciting game of round 16 in the SLB took place in La Asuncion. This derby game ended with only one-point defeat on the road of 4th ranked Indios (7-7) to seventh ranked Taurinos (4-10) 68-67 on Thursday evening. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Indios. Taurinos forced 20 Indios turnovers. Worth to mention a great performance of the former international guard Michael Flores (192-85) who helped to win the game recording 18 points and 6 rebounds. The former international swingman Rafael Guevara (193-79) contributed with 17 points for the winners. Naturalized Dominican power forward Jhoyfer Diaz (200-87) replied with 19 points and 9 rebounds for Indios. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Taurinos maintains seventh position with 4-10 record. Indios at the other side keep the fourth place with seven games lost. Taurinos are looking forward to face higher ranked Gigantes (#3) in Puerto Ordaz in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Indios will play on the road against Condores in Margarita and are hoping to win this game.
Another interesting game was a derby match between two teams from Caracas: Spartans (#1) and Brillantes (#8). Brillantes were smashed at home by 26 points 64-90 and even the fact of playing on their own court did not help. Worth to mention a great performance of point guard Angel Blanco (179-97) who helped to win the game recording 26 points (made all of his eight free throws) and Elian Centeno who added 12 points and 6 rebounds during the contest. Spartans' coach Pablo Favarel felt very confident that he used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. At the losing side Neill Ojeda (190-91) responded with 18 points and 6 rebounds. Spartans have a solid four-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains first position with 12-2 record. Brillantes at the other side keep the eighth place with 12 games lost. Spartans' supporters look forward to another derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Caracas to the arena Diablos.
Another interesting game was again a derby between two local teams from Caracas: Gladiadores (#5) and Cocodrilos (#2). Gladiadores (7-8) won against visiting Cocodrilos (11-3) 75-62. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Cocodrilos. The winners were led by Humberto Bompart who scored that evening 25 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Even 18 points and 6 assists by Gregory Vargas did not help to save the game for Cocodrilos. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Gladiadores maintains fifth position with 7-8 record, which they share with Supersonicos. Loser Cocodrilos keep the second place with three games lost. Gladiadores' supporters look forward to another derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Caracas Broncos.
Another interesting game was again a derby match of two teams from Caracas: Llaneros (#7) and Broncos (#3). Llaneros (6-8) won against visiting Broncos (9-5) 77-72. Graddy Osorio fired 19 points and 6 rebounds for the winners. Both coaches allowed to play bench players in such tough game. Llaneros have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to sixth place, which they share with Bucaneros. Broncos at the other side keep the third position with five games lost. Llaneros' supporters look forward to another derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Caracas to the arena Heroes.
Very important is a home loss of third ranked Diablos (9-5) against seventh ranked Bucaneros (6-8) on Thursday night. Host Diablos were defeated by Bucaneros in a tough game in Caracas 70-78. It was a very good performance for Eduardo Diaz who helped to win the game recording 24 points, 7 rebounds and 6 blocks. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Bucaneros moved-up to sixth place, which they share with Llaneros. Loser Diablos keep the third position with five games lost. Bucaneros will face league's second-placed Cocodrilos in Caracas in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Diablos' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Caracas Spartans.

Other games in round 16 were not that significant. Supersonicos beat Condores on the road 74-69. Gigantes won against Centauros on its own court 81-75. Trotamundos managed to outperform Cangrejeros in La Asuncion 68-64.
The most impressive performance of 16th round was 15 points and 4 assists by Cristian Centeno of Llaneros.



Brillantes - Spartans 64-90

Another interesting game was a derby match between two teams from Caracas: Spartans (#1) and Brillantes (#8). Brillantes were smashed at home by 26 points 64-90 and even the fact of playing on their own court did not help. Spartans brought some defensive toughness making 11 blocks. Condores - Supersonicos 69-74

No shocking result in a game when sixth ranked Supersonicos (7-8) beat 9th ranked Condores (1-12) in Margarita 74-69 on Wednesday. It was a very good performance for Colombian power forward Luis Almanza (196-91) who helped to win the game recording 15 points and 9 rebounds. Guard Wilkerman Gomez (190-1) contributed with 19 points for the winners. Colombian forward Miguel Fernandez (194-92) replied with 22 points and 7 rebounds and power forward Erick Rodriguez (201-99) added 13 points and 9 rebounds in the effort for Condores. Both coaches allowed to play bench players in such tough game. Supersonicos moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Gladiadores. Condores lost fifth consecutive game. They keep the ninth position with 12 games lost. Supersonicos will face Cangrejeros (#8) in Maturin in the next round. Condores will play at home against Indios and hope to win that game.

Gladiadores - Cocodrilos 75-62

Another interesting game was again a derby between two local teams from Caracas: Gladiadores (#5) and Cocodrilos (#2). Gladiadores (7-8) won against visiting Cocodrilos (11-3) 75-62. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Cocodrilos. The winners were led by point guard Humberto Bompart (183-94) who scored that evening 25 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists and forward Deivis Ananguren (192-85) supported him with 14 points, 16 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals. Four Gladiadores players scored in double figures. Even 18 points and 6 assists by the former international point guard Gregory Vargas (182-86, agency: Pro Sports) did not help to save the game for Cocodrilos. The former international forward Luis Bethelmy (200-86) added 11 points and 10 rebounds for lost side. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Gigantes - Centauros 81-75

Rather expected game when 5th ranked Centauros (6-7) lost to third ranked Gigantes (10-4) in Puerto Ordaz 75-81 on Wednesday. Gigantes outrebounded Centauros 41-30 including 30 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. It was a very good performance for swingman Luis Duarte (190-94) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 21 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks. The former international point guard Edwin Mijares (186-92) contributed with a double-double by scoring 10 points, 7 rebounds and 11 assists for the winners. Four Gigantes players scored in double figures. Luis Germany (195-95) replied with 17 points and the former international Jose Bracho (190-98) added 11 points and 6 assists in the effort for Centauros. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Gigantes have an impressive six-game winning streak. They maintain third position with 10-4 record having four points less than leader Spartans. Loser Centauros dropped to the sixth place with seven games lost. Gigantes will face Taurinos (#7) in La Asuncion in the next round. Centauros will play on the road against the league's leader Guaiqueries in Porlamar and hope to win that game.

Power forward Carlos Milano (198-85) contributed with a double-double by scoring 12 points and 14 rebounds for the winners.
