SLB Round 17: Diablos are defeated by Spartans in a derby game

Here is the last round review presented by ESL.

The most exciting game was a derby match between two local teams from Caracas: Spartans (#1) and Diablos (#4). Diablos were defeated at home 70-77 and even the advantage of their own court did not help. The former international center Javinger Vargas (202-90) stepped up and scored 16 points and 6 rebounds for the winners and the former international Jose Rodriguez (197-94) chipped in 6 points and 11 rebounds. International forward Anyelo Cisneros (198-97) responded with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 15 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Spartans (13-2) have an impressive series of five victories in a row. Defending champion maintains first place. Diablos lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the third position with six games lost. They share it with Broncos. Spartans are looking forward to face Bucaneros (#7) in La Guaira in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Diablos' supporters also look forward to another derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Caracas Llaneros.
Another exciting game was again a derby between two teams from Caracas: Gladiadores (#5) and Broncos (#3). Gladiadores (8-8) won against visiting Broncos (9-6) 75-67. Point guard Humberto Bompart (183-94) nailed 21 points, 5 assists and 5 steals for the winning side and Yorbi Umbria accounted for 13 points and 7 rebounds. Swingman Danny Arias (193-97) came up with 10 points and 6 rebounds for Broncos in the defeat. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. The victory was the third consecutive win for Gladiadores. They maintain fifth place with 8-8 record, which they share with Supersonicos. Broncos at the other side keep the third position with six games lost. They share it with Diablos. Gladiadores will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Broncos' supporters look forward to another derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Caracas Heroes.
SLB top team - Guaiqueries (15-0) had no problems winning another game on Friday. This time they beat sixth ranked Centauros (6-8) in Porlamar 79-62. The best player for the winners was Edgar Martinez who scored 21 points and 7 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field). Luis Germany produced 13 points for the guests. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. The victory was the fifteenth consecutive win for Guaiqueries. They maintain first place with 15-0 record. Centauros lost their third game in a row. They keep the sixth position with eight games lost. Guaiqueries will meet league's second-placed Gigantes in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Centauros will play against Trotamundos (#3) and hope to secure a win.

It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Taurinos. Axiers Sucre orchestrated the victory by scoring 22 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. The victory was the seventh consecutive win for Gigantes. They moved-up to second place, which they share with Trotamundos. Taurinos at the other side keep the seventh position with 11 games lost. Gigantes' next round opponent will be league's leader Guaiqueries in Porlamar and it will be for sure the game of the week. Taurinos will play on the road against Condores (#9) in Margarita and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Cocodrilos maintains second place with 12-3 record having just three points less than leader Spartans. Loser Bucaneros dropped to the seventh position with nine games lost. Cocodrilos' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Caracas Brillantes.

There were no shocking results in the rest of the games of round 17: Llaneros won against Heroes on the opponent's court 72-64. Supersonicos managed to outperform Cangrejeros in a home game 83-70. Indios managed to beat Condores on the road 82-78.
The most impressive stats of the last round was 17 points by Emilio Cappare of Indios.

Taurinos - Gigantes 60-83

The game in La Asuncion supposed to be also worth to mention about. Third ranked Gigantes (11-4) played at the court of 7th ranked Taurinos (4-11). Gigantes smashed Taurinos 83-60. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Taurinos. They outrebounded Taurinos 34-21 including 26 on the defensive glass. It was a great shooting night for Gigantes especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 57.1 percentage. The former international forward Axiers Sucre (199-78) orchestrated the victory by scoring 22 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. The former international point guard Edwin Mijares (186-92) contributed with 13 points and 5 assists for the winners. Forward Jesus Rodriguez (200-93) answered with 10 points and 6 rebounds and the former international swingman Rafael Guevara (193-79) added 14 points in the effort for Taurinos. The game in La Guaira was also quite interesting. Second ranked Cocodrilos (12-3) played at the court of 6th ranked Bucaneros (6-9). Cocodrilos defeated Bucaneros 85-70 on Friday. Cocodrilos made 16-of-19 free shots (84.2 percent) during the game. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Cocodrilos made 7 blocks.
