Cup Round 5: Gladiadores lose to Guaiqueries

The biggest surprise took place in Porlamar where host Guaiqueries (4-0) edged league's leader Gladiadores (3-1) 71-68 on Thursday evening. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Gladiadores. It was a key game for the top position in the league. The best player for the winners was international point guard Heissler Guillent (186-86) who scored 23 points and 8 assists. Swingman Luis Duarte (190-94) chipped in 12 points and 8 rebounds. Power forward Jesus Martinez (206-86) produced a double-double by scoring 18 points and 11 rebounds for the guests. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Guaiqueries have a solid series of four victories in a row. They keep a position of league leader. Gladiadores at the other side dropped to the second place with one game lost. They were replaced at the leadership position by Spartans. Gladiadores will play next round against strong Broncos trying to make it back to the top of the standings. It will be a derby game for which supporters look forward to, where their team will travel locally in Caracas to the arena of Broncos. Guaiqueries will try to continue on its current victory against third ranked Supersonicos in Margarita.
Another exciting game was played in Margarita between fourth ranked Broncos and 5th ranked Centauros where Broncos (2-2) beat Centauros (1-3) on the road 64-60. Swingman Danny Arias (193-97) orchestrated the victory by scoring 14 points and 7 rebounds. Musa Abdul-Aleem contributed with 15 points for the winners. American-Mexican Durrell Summers (196-89, college: Michigan St.) answered with 24 points for Centauros. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Broncos moved-up to third place, which they share with Supersonicos. Centauros at the other side keep the fifth position with three games lost. They share it with Taurinos. Broncos' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Caracas Gladiadores.
Another exciting game was a derby match between two local teams from Caracas: Spartans (#1) and Llaneros (#6). Spartans (6-0) won against visiting Llaneros (0-2) 68-59. Windi Graterol stepped up with a double-double by scoring 10 points and 10 rebounds for the winners. Yerri Flores responded with 27 points. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Undefeated Spartans have an impressive series of six victories in a row. They maintain first place with 6-0 record. Loser Llaneros still closes the standings with two games lost. Spartans' supporters look forward to another derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Caracas Heroes.

Other games of round 5 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
Supersonicos were defeated by Gladiadores in Caracas 78-68. Taurinos were beaten by Cocodrilos at home 69-74. Trotamundos destroyed Llaneros on the opponent's court 85-48. Cocodrilos managed to outperform Diablos in a home game 80-74.

No shocking result in a game in La Asuncion where second ranked Cocodrilos (4-1) defeated 4th placed Taurinos (1-3) 74-69 on Wednesday. Cocodrilos made 22-of-27 free shots (81.5 percent) during the game. They also forced 20 Taurinos turnovers. American point guard Greg Foster (190-89, college: SVSU) stepped up and scored 23 points and 5 rebounds (was perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line !!!) for the winners and the former international swingman Cesar Garcia (193-90) chipped in 16 points and 4 steals. Eduardo Diaz (205-93) responded with a double-double by scoring 18 points and 11 rebounds and point guard Emiro Hernandez (188-94) scored 13 points and 5 rebounds. Four Taurinos players scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players in such tough game. Cocodrilos maintains second place with 4-1 record having just one point less than leader Spartans. Loser Taurinos dropped to the fifth position with three games lost. They share it with Centauros.
