SPB Round 29: Gladiadores keep a leadership position

The game had a very big importance for second-ranked Gladiadores as it allowed them to take a leadership position. Gladiadores defeated 4th placed Marinos in Caracas 100-89. 29 personal fouls committed by Marinos helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. American forward Cleanthony Early (203-1991, college: Wichita St.) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 28 points, 13 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners and his fellow American import guard Sheldon Mac (196-1992, college: Miami, FL, agency: Slash Sports) chipped in 36 points (!!!) and 4 steals. Greek swingman Kostas Vasileiadis (200-1984) responded with 30 points and 6 assists. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. As mentioned above they are alone now at the top position. Marinos at the other side keep the fourth place with 11 games lost. Marinos will play next round against Cangrejeros trying to get back on the winning streak. Gladiadores will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game.
Important game to mention about took place in Caracas. First ranked Cocodrilos (13-3) saved a 1-point victory at home edging second-ranked Guaiqueries (12-5) 69-68 in the game for the first place. The former international forward Luis Bethelmy (200-1986) nailed a double-double by scoring 15 points and 10 rebounds for the winning side and Gelvis Solano accounted for 18 points. American guard Melvin Johnson (193-1993, college: VCU) came up with 19 points for Guaiqueries in the defeat. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Cocodrilos have an impressive series of five victories in a row. They maintain first place with 13-3 record. Guaiqueries at the other side keep the second position with five games lost. They share it with Gigantes. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.
Another exciting game was a derby match between two local teams from Caracas: Broncos (#2) and Heroes (#4). Broncos (13-8) won against visiting Heroes (8-9) 81-72. The best player for the winners was Musa Abdul-Aleem who scored 20 points. Broncos' coach Manuel Berroteran used a ten-player rotation and allowed the starting five to rest. Keron DeShields produced 16 points and 9 assists for the guests. Broncos maintains second place with 13-8 record having just five point less than leader Centauros. Loser Heroes keep the fourth position with nine games lost. Broncos' supporters look forward to another derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Caracas .

There were no shocking results in the rest of the games of round 29: Guaiqueries lost to Supersonicos on the opponent's court 85-98. Cangrejeros unfortunately lost to Gigantes in a home game 91-96. Toros recorded a loss to Guaros on the road 61-75.

We cannot really consider it an upset in the game between close teams in Margarita where second-ranked Guaiqueries (12-5) were defeated by third ranked Supersonicos (4-9) 98-85 on Friday. Supersonicos made 18-of-23 free shots (78.3 percent) during the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. The best player for the winners was American-Nigerian swingman Tanksley Efianayi (198-1994, college: UCF) who had a double-double by scoring 32 points, 15 rebounds and 9 assists (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line). Argentinian point guard Leandro Vildoza (180-1994) chipped in 16 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. American guard Melvin Johnson (193-1993, college: VCU) produced 21 points and 6 assists and the other American import forward Anthony Young (200-1989, college: KWC) added 19 points respectively for the guests. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Supersonicos maintains third place with 4-9 record having twelve points less than leader Centauros. Loser Guaiqueries keep the second position with five games lost. They share it with Gigantes. The best player for the winners was American Trey Gilder (206-1985, college: NSU) who scored 19 points. The former international power forward Luis Valera (202-1988, college: UTRGV) chipped in 18 points. American forward Eric Frederick (203-1989, college: TxWes) produced 19 points and 6 rebounds and Argentinian forward Nicholas Wadell (201-1989) added 13 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists respectively for the hosts. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players in such tough game. Gigantes moved-up to second place, which they share with Guaiqueries. Cangrejeros lost their fifth game in a row. They keep the fifth position with 15 games lost. Gigantes will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Cangrejeros will play against Marinos (#4) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Forward Javier Vargas (197-1998) produced 16 points and 5 rebounds and point guard Edson Tovar (180-2005) added 13 points and 8 rebounds respectively for the guests. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. The victory was the third consecutive win for Guaros. They moved-up to third place. Toros lost their eighth game in a row. They keep the fifth position with 16 games lost. Guaros will meet at home Llaneros (#4) in the next round. Toros will play against the league's leader Trotamundos and hope to secure a win.
