This is an historical success for all the CostaRican basketball. The triumph of the 'Red Express' was completed by the award of its player Kendrick Jones (190-G-83, college: Columbus St.) as the Final Four MVP. Jones scored 20 pts in the last game, and his teammate Hernol Hall (205-C-82, agency: Sports Plus International, college: Lon Morris JC) scored 24 pts to be the team's top scorer. In the last game of the competition, Pioneros de Quintana Roo-Cancun prevailed over Icevic Tegucigalpa 89-70, clinching the second spot for the Liga de las Americas. The 'Red Express' Liceo of Costa Rica surprised Pioneros de Quintana Roo at their home court with a convicing 78-73 win over the unanimous favorite team of Liga Centroamericana 2008, and took the top of the classification table for the Final Four being held at Cancun. Jeffrey Spencer (189-F-81) was the game top scorer at 22, Enrique Zuniga (193-G-75, college: Grand Canyon) led Pioneros with 28 pts in losing effort. [read more]

'We prepared very well, and knew that today was the day', shared Coach Rodolfo Fonseca after their victory over the Mexican team, 'and we won because we played with the heart of Costa Rica'. The visiting team took a 6-points lead since the 1st Quarter, and never let it go until the end of regulation, in spite of the full house of fans that never ceased to cheer Pioneros. Tonight's schedule, when Sat-Cybertech faces Liceo, and Pioneros de Quintana Roo meets Icevic of Honduras, will determine for good what teams will capture the two tickets for Liga de las Americas 2008, as nothing is yet fixed because if both Sat-Cybertech and Pioneros win their matches, there would be triple-tie at the top of the table. With this win, the tied overall series between the two clubs was broken, favoring Sat-Cybertech, and the chance for the Guatemalans to get their classification for Liga de las Americas 2008 remained alive. Import player Henry Martinez (186-G/F-75, agency: Interperformances) scored 30 pts to lead his team to this victory and to set the stage for a deadly confrontation with Liceo of Costa Rica tomorrow. Icevic will also play tomorrow against the favorite team of the tournament Pioneros de Quintana Roo.
