The United States of America U16 clinched Gold of the 2009 FIBA Americas U16
Championship by beating Argentina 101:87. The winners looked great
throughout the whole tournament and rightfully deserved the top place. Both
teams as well as Canada qualified directly for the 2010 FIBA U17 World
Championship that will be held in Hamburg, Germany.
That was a good start of the Final for the undefeated teams of the
tournament. The first two quarters were the same both in scenario and the
score. The United States broke the tie quickly with a three pointer and
finished up 25:18. In the beginning of the second period USA made an 11-0
run to take a 36:21 lead. Led by James McAdoo and Brad Beal the team enjoyed
50:36 at the halftime.
In the third period the United States of America U16 dominated the court as
well as increased the lead to 21 points. They could start celebrating at
that time and actually slowed down a bit in the last frame. Argentina U16
meanwhile produced a 35-28 in the last period and managed to reduce the gap.
Brad Beal
(6'3''-G-93) paced all the winners with 26 points to clinch Gold with his
team.
Quinn Cook
(5'11''-G-92) ended up with 22 points, while Mc Adoo James posted 20.

Canada U16 won over Venezuela U16 to qualify for the 2010 FIBA
U17 World Championship. The North American team grabbed the
Bronze medal game of the 2009 FIBA Americas U16 Championship.
The game between Canada U16 and Venezuela U16 became not only
the game for the third place, however for the 2010 FIBA U17
World Championship ticket as well. Canada opened the game with
11-2 run to take 23;10 lead after the opening quarter. Venezuela
U16 started to play better in the second period however could
not catch up the opponents. Canada won 21-19 to finish the first
half up 44:29. Led by Nicholas Lewis and Duane Notice the
winners went to the lockers with 15-point advantage.
The teams struggled hard in the third period coming back from
the lockers as Canada still held the lead. Moreover the team
from North America never looked behind and increased the lead. A
29-23 gave them 21 points to enter the last stanza. Another
offensive 33-29 in the last period gave Canada the important win
to qualify for the 2010 FIBA U17 World Championship.
Brazil U16 clinched the fifth place at the FIBA Americas U16
Championship held in Mendoza, Argentina. In the game for the
fifth place Brazil outscored Puerto Rico 82:79. Both teams
fought for the lead in the final quarter but in the final
seconds a three pointer by Leonardo Simoes gave Brazil the
necessary win.
Brazil took a 24:21 lead at the end of the opening quarter.
The team looked much better than the opponents and started
to extend the lead later in the first half. Brazil made an
11-2 run to close the first half up 48:33.
Puerto Rico however bounced back in the second half and
produced 27-17 in the third period. it gave them 60:65 at
the end of the thirty minutes of the game. Puerto Rico even
played better in the last period and managed to come closer
to the opponents. The intrigue remained in the court until
the last minutes however Leonardo Simoes nailed a
three-pointer to seal the win with his team.
Simoes Leonardo paced all the winners with 26 points as
Brazil finished 5th in the tournament.

poured in 18, while Martini Giovanni chipped in 8.
Carmelo Betancourt (-92)
ended up with 24 points in the losing effort and
Gary Browne (-92) scored
21. Puerto Rico U16 finishes the campaign on the 6th
position.
Bahamas U16 handed Mexico U16 another overtime loss and
escaped the last place of FIBA Americas U16
Championship. Bahamas U16 celebraed the initial victory
to finish on the 7th spot after 87:83 over Mexico U16.
Both teams started even and desired to finish the
tournament with a win. Bahamas enjoyed a 21-15 lead with
one minute left but the Mexicans came back with a 6-0
run to close tied at 21:21. Again it was Bahamas that
made an 8-0 run to take a 35:27 lead and finish the
first half up 42:33.
The third period became the most productive for both
teams as they managed to pour in 49 points. Mexico
reduced the gap after 25-24 and hoped for the last
period. Mexico returned once again and a quick 4-0 run
after two free throws and a basket forced the overtime
period tied at 74:74. Bahamas made a 7-0 run in the
final two minutes for the initial win in FIBA Americas
U16 Championship.

2009 United States of America U16-Canada U16 126:78
The United States of America U16 qualify to FIBA U17 World Championship that
will be held in Germany. Last night the team overcame Canada U16 126:78 to
reach the Final of 2009 FIBA Americas U16 Championship. The game was almost
even in the first half, however the winners smashed the opponents in the
second half to reach the Final.
USA opened the game with some quick baskets to take 17:5 lead in the middle
of the first period. Later on the winners grabbed 35:21 at the end of the
first 10 minutes. Canada however replied with an 11-3 run in the final two
minutes to leave the first half score 57:48. The game was defined in the
third quarter with a 30-5 run by USA to get an 87:53 lead. After 37-20 in
the last stanza the favorites reached the final game.Adonis Thomas and McAdoo Ray top-scored for
the winners with 19 points each.
Brad Beal nailed 18, while
Quinn Cook (5'11''-G-92) posted 15.
Nikolas Stauskas (6'4''-G-93) produced 21

play for the gold medal against the USA. The win also ensured the ticket

The winners started well and won the opening tip with 6:2. Even though
Venezuela did not give up, Argentine kept 21:18 lead after the first ten
minutes of the game. In the second period Argentina created a 9-2 run to
take 40:29 advantage. Venezuela replied with 5-2 run to go to the
lockers with 42:34.
The tempo slowed down in the second half as the teams paid more
attention to defense. Venezuela reduced the gap a bit in the middle of
the quarter, however Argentina produced a 5-0 run to go on 58:46. Blanco

Puerto Rico U16 - Bahamas U16 82:74 Puerto Rican U16 National Team celebrated a tough
win over pesky Bahamas to ensure the clash with Brazil for
the fifth spot at the Fiba Americas Championship. Bahamas
will now take on Mexico for the 7th place. Puerto Rico have
earned just one win at the preliminary round, while Bahamas
entered the game winless. And the first win for Bahamas
never looked close as Puerto Rico surged ahead in the
opening stanza. The Latin American team built a 19:15
advantage at the first intermission but could not maintain
it. Bahamas came back firing from all guns in the second
stanza. They outscored their opponents 23:10 to secure a
38:29 advantage at the interval.
Bahamas stretched the margin to as many as 12 points in the
third frame however Puerto Rico found the way out. They
pulled together to trim the deficit to a single point with
ten minutes remaining. The Caribbean team controlled the
tempo early in the fourth stanza as they restored a 9-point
advantage midway through the frame. But Puerto Rico
unleashed a decisive 21:4 run to crown the game and
celebrated a spectacular though tough win at the end.

Brazil U16 - Mexico U16 83:80 (OT)Brazilian U16
National team overcame Mexico to reach the game for the fifth
spot at the Fiba Americas championship. They will now take on
Puerto Rico for the position. Mexico will play against Bahamas
to escape from the last spot in the standings. Brazil entered
the game winless and seemed to head for another loss early in
the game. Mexican team gained control in the first stanza as
Raul Borquez (-93) went on
fire. He dropped 8 points in the frame as Mexico accounted for a
24:15 advantage. Borquez continued to terrorize Brazilian
defense in the second quarter as he added 8 more points as
Mexico maintained the lead. Little changed in the third period
as Mexican team looked calm and confident. Sergio Panduro
crowned the frame with a three-pointer to give Mexico a 60:48
advantage after three quarters of action. But Brazil found the
ways to recover in the final term. They were trailing by 4
points with under a minute remaining however buckets from
Giovanni Martini and Luis da Costa tied the score at the end of
regulation. Eventually Igor Avelino stepped up with back-to-back
jumpers late in the extra period to propel Brazil to the initial
win at the tournament.
Murilo Nocetti dropped 20 points to pace Brazil. Luis Da Costa
had 12 points for the winners.

The End of the Preliminary Round - Jun. 20, 2009 GROUP AVenezuela U16 -Brazil U16 81:58
Venezuela overcame Brazil 81:58 to clinch the semifinal birth of 2009
FIBA Americas U16 Championship. Venezuela celebrated the second victory to
finish Group A with 2-1 record and will play against Argentina in the
semifinals. Brazil finishes with an 0-3 record.
It was Brazil that had nothing to lose and could play their game. Brazil
dominated the first quarter 18:14 and looked forward to keep the score for good.
Venezuela responded however with a 9-0 run to take the lead 23:18 and finish at
halftime up 38:26. Led by
Anthony Perez (-94) and Blanco Key Israel de Jesus Venezuela U16 just needed
a victory to take the semifinal ticket. In the third period the intrigue went to
the end as Venezuela U16 played too good for the opponents. The winners produced
28-15 to take 66:41 advantage. In the final quarter the lead was never lower
than 24 points.
Anthony Perez paced all the winners with 22 points.

The United States of America U16 easily won Group A of FIBA Americas U16
Championship. In the last day of the Preliminary Round the favorites smashed
Puerto Rico 126:73 and advanced to the semifinals. The United States of
America U16 will face Canada that finished second in Group B.
Puerto Rico opened the game with a three pointer and thanks to those baskets
they stayed in the game for most of the first quarter. USA again showed
great basketball and dominated the whole game as they won the first period
26:21. USA made a 14-0 run in the second quarter to take a 46:25 lead and
finish up 56:33. In the third period the favorites produced 33-19 and the
task for the last frame was to reach 100. They easily made it as the team
posted 37 points in the period to celebrate 126:73 victory.

will now take on Brazil in the 5th-8th spot qualifying games.

Mexico and Bahamas looked well-matched in the first half. The
Latin American team grabbed a 15:13 lead after ten minutes of
action but could not maintain it. Bahamas tied the game at 30
with twenty minutes gone in the encounter. The Caribbean team

Group B of the U16 Fiba Americas championship held in Mendoza. They
outgunned Canada in overtime in the third round to finish the
preliminary campaign undefeated. Argentina will now take on Venezuela in
the semifinals. Canada also made it to the semis despite the loss. They
clinched the second spot in the pool and would face the USA tonight.
The teams kept it close in the opening frame and finished it tied at 23.
Pangos led Canada in the second frame as he accounted for 13 points in
the half. His bucket capped the second stanza giving Canada a 41:40
advantage at the interval. Argentina struck right back stealing the lead
from their opponents in the third quarter.

quarters of action. The teams traded baskets throughout the final frame
with neither side able to clear off. It all came down to the final
seconds but it did not bring any final answers as the sides were leveled

the extra period firing down the visitors and celebrating a tough win at

The game between Brazil U16 and Puerto Rico U16 became the most interesting in
Day 2 of FIBA Americas U16 Championship. Puerto Rico U16 grabbed 83:81 win over
Brazil U16 to tie their record at 1-1.
From the very beginning it became clear that the teams would fight up to the end
of the campaign. Brazil looked better in the first half and took 22:19 lead at
the end of the opening quarter. The things got better for the Brazilian squad in
the second quarter as they started to increase the lead. A productive 22-12 in
the frame brought them 44:31 advantage at the halftime.
The game however was not over for Puerto Rico U16. led by Browne Ramirez Gary
and Betancourt Carbonell Carmelo they became to reduce the gap and to dominate
the court. Puerto Rico shocked Brazil 29-13 in the third period for 60:57. The
last period became very exciting for the spectators as the teams remained alive
for the victory until the last seconds. Puerto Rico grabbed the last seconds win
to tie both teams records at 1-1.

second consecutive victory at the Fiba American championship. They
dismantled Mexico to remain on top of Group B. The win also
propelled the hosts into the semifinal stage of the tourney. Mexico
suffered the second loss in a row and remained at the bottom of the
ladder winless.
Mexico tried to stay close in the first frame. They trailed by 7
points after ten minutes but then turnovers plagued the team.
Argentina held their opponents to just 4 points in the second stanza
to clear off to a 40:15 distance at halftime. Mexico could not pick
up the tempo offensively as they managed just 9 points in the third
frame. Argentina eased to a 40-point advantage after three quarters.
The home team cruised to the victory in the final term.

second day of the competition to ensure their semifinal birth.
Canada will now take on Argentina for the top position in Pool B.
Canada rallied in front early in the encounter. Their offense worked
hard to account for as many as 32 points in the opening stanza. It
was worth a 26-point advantage after ten minutes.
Michael Carey Jr. (196-G-93) kept
Bahamas in the game as they showed some signs of recovery in the
second quarter. The Caribbean team adjusted their defense and
limited Canada to 16 points. Bahamas thus clipped the margin to
trail by 23 points at the interval. Bahamas stayed persistent in the
third frame as they got the rhythm now. They shot down Canada and
got as close as 13 points from their opponents. But the North
American team snapped the run from Bahamas in the fourth term.

USA opened their FIBA Americas U16 Championship with an easy win
over Brazil in the opener. USA looked much better in the whole game to take
1-0 record in the group.
The favorites took the lead from the very beginning and never looked behind
after. After the first 5 minutes USA already had 16-6 lead and then led to
26:15 at the end of the opening quarter. The United States of America team
did not slow down and increased the lead in the second period as well. They
produced a 28-22 to take 54:37 halftime advantage. Brazil however played
better in the third period and as result they won the frame 21-20. In order
to prove the superiority in the tournament and to be the leader of the group
from the very beginning USA had 36-24 in the last period to win 110:82.
Adonis Thomas led the winners with 21
points while Bradley Beal nailed 19.
Andre Drummond ended up with 16 points with
11 boards. Gustavo Scaglia De Paula produced 16 points in the losing effort

opening quarter. Michael Alberto Carrera shined for Venezuela, while

waste too much time to stun their opponents in this one. They accounted
for 17 straight points to start the game. Bahamas never came back to
life in the opening frame trailing by as many as 24 points at the first
intermission. But Bahamas refused to surrender. The Caribbean team
struck back with a 14:3 run in the second frame to clip the margin.
Argentina however stopped the bleeding and arrived at halftime ahead by
21 points. The home team started the second half confidently and
dominated at this point. Argentina posted 30 points in the third quarter
and raced to a 29-point lead after thirty minutes. Bahamas had no answer
for the onslaught and lost the battle.

Canada U16 - Mexico U16 90:44Canadian U16 National Team got to an impressive start of their U16 Fiba
Americas Championship campaign. The North American team faced Mexico in
Group B opener. Canada left no chance for their opponents claiming a
spectacular 46-point victory at the end.
Canada opened the battle with an 11:2 run to take the lead. They continued
to dominate throughout the opening stanza and built a 25:11 advantage after
ten minutes. Mexico could not change the complexion of the game in the
second frame. They scored just 8 points and appeared trailing by 27 points
at halftime.
Canada quickly built a 30-point advantage in the third frame and rolled
comfortably. Mexico lost the battle under the rims and shot just 23% from
the field. They never threatened the margin as Canada ensured the winning
outcome at the end.
