Guaiqueries - Cocodrilos 62-75 There was no surprise in Porlamar where 5th ranked Guaiqueries (8-7) were defeated by second ranked Cocodrilos (12-3) 75-62 on Monday. Cocodrilos dominated down low during the game scoring 38 of its points in the paint compared to Guaiqueries' 18. They outrebounded Guaiqueries 40-28 including a 35-22 advantage in defensive rebounds. Dominican Luis Montero (203-1993, college: South Plains) stepped up and scored 11 points and 9 rebounds for the winners and American guard New Williams (185-1996, college: Fresno St.) chipped in 19 points. Five Cocodrilos players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was American-Nigerian swingman Tanksley Efianayi (198-1994, college: UCF) with 16 points and American forward Tre McLean (197-1993, college: Chattanooga) scored 8 points and 7 rebounds. Guaiqueries' coach Pablo Favarel rotated eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Cocodrilos have an impressive series of six victories in a row. They maintain second place with 12-3 record having just two points less than leader Gladiadores. Guaiqueries at the other side keep the fifth position with seven games lost. Cocodrilos will meet Cangrejeros (#10) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Guaiqueries will play against Spartans (#6) and it may be a tough game between close rivals. Guaros dominated down low during the game scoring 50 of its points in the paint compared to Broncos' 30. Dominican point guard Raimer Santana (183-1997) stepped up and scored 18 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners and guard Edry Gonzalez (185-1998) chipped in 23 points and 6 rebounds. Dominican Rigoberto Mendoza (190-1992) stepped up and scored 17 points and 4 assists for the winners and Dominican guard Juan Suero (196-1993) chipped in 10 points and 7 rebounds. Four Piratas players scored in double figures. It was a good game for Dominican point guard Yerri Flores (188-1996, college: High School) who saved his team from a defeat with 33 points (!!!). Forward Cristian Centeno (195-1996) contributed with 13 points, 6 assists and 4 steals for the winners. British center Kavell Bigby-Williams (211-1995, college: LSU) answered with 20 points, 7 rebounds and 4 blocks and swingman Kevin Nino (195-1991) added 22 points and 6 rebounds in the effort for Heroes. Four Heroes players scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Llaneros maintains eighth place with 6-10 record. Heroes lost third consecutive game. They keep the sixth position with nine games lost. Llaneros' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Caracas Broncos. Toros had a 29-17 advantage in offensive rebounds. It was a great shooting night for Toros especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 62.5 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Uruguayan Gaston Semiglia (186-1991) stepped up and scored 24 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists for the winners and swingman Beiker Barrios (193-2002) chipped in 12 points and 8 rebounds. Toros' coach Rafael Infante used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The best for the losing side was American guard James Reese V (193-1998, college: S.Carolina) with 18 points and the former international swingman Cesar Silva (190-1981) scored 8 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 7 steals. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Toros maintains tenth place with 2-15 record. Loser Brillantes dropped to the fourth position with six games lost. Toros will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Brillantes will play against Taurinos (#9) in La Asuncion and hope to secure a win.
