NBB Round 9: Flamengo defeat Minas

The most crucial game of the last round was the first loss of Minas (6-1) in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday night. Visitors were rolled over by third ranked Flamengo (7-1) 99-63. It ended at the same time the six-game winning streak of Minas. It was a key game for the second position in the league. Flamengo shot 61.9 percent from the field. They outrebounded Minas 38-23 including a 28-13 advantage in defensive rebounds. Flamengo shot the lights out from three sinking 16 long-distance shots on high 61.5 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. It was a good game for American Brandon Robinson (196-89, college: Clayton St.) who led his team to a victory with 19 points and 8 rebounds. American-Jordanian Dar Tucker (193-88, college: DePaul) contributed with 18 points for the winners. American guard Shaquille Johnson (194-90, college: Marshall, agency: Interperformances) answered with 24 points and 4 steals for Minas. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Defending champion moved-up to second place. Minas at the other side dropped to the third position with one game lost. Flamengo are looking forward to face Rio Claro (#12) at home in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Minas will play against the league's leader Vivo/Franca (#1) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Mogi at the other side dropped to the sixth place with four games lost. Brasilia will play against higher ranked Corinthians (#14) in Sao Paulo in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Mogi will play at home against UNIFACISA (#13) and hopes to get back on the winning track.
NBB top team - Vivo/Franca (8-0) added another victory to their record on Saturday. This time they beat ninth ranked Paulistano (3-4) in Sao Paulo 82-78. Lucas Mariano nailed 23 points and 6 rebounds for the winning side. Eduardo Sommer came up with 20 points (went 8 for 8 at the free throw line) for Paulistano in the defeat. Paulistano's coach Demetrius Ferraciu tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Undefeated Vivo/Franca have an impressive series of eight victories in a row. They maintain first place with 8-0 record. Paulistano lost third consecutive game. They keep the ninth position with four games lost. They share it with Pinheiros and Cerrado. Vivo/Franca will meet Minas (#3) in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Paulistano will play against Cerrado (#9) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

There were no big surprises in other games of round 9: Caxias do Sul beat UniFacisa on the road 70-53. Fortaleza won against U.Corinthians on its own court 77-76. Pato Basquete managed to outperform Cerrado in Pato Branco 86-85. Rio Claro recorded a loss to Corinthians at home 63-75. Pato Basquete defeated Brasilia on the opponent's court 70-53. Cerrado was beaten by Mogi in a home game 74-86.
The most impressive performance of 9th round was 16 points and 6 rebounds by Wesley Ferreira of Mogi.

UniFacisa - Caxias do Sul 53-70

The game between closely ranked teams ended with eleventh ranked Caxias do Sul's (4-5) road victory over 12th ranked UNIFACISA (2-3) in Paraiba 70-53 on Friday. Naturalized French Pedro Mendonca (196-95) nailed 9 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists for the winning side and center Wesley Sena (210-96) accounted for 12 points and 6 rebounds. The former international power forward Gerson Santo (206-91, college: Colorado St.) came up with 18 points and 7 rebounds and the former international swingman Antonio Ferreira (200-94) added 12 points and 10 rebounds respectively for UNIFACISA in the defeat. Caxias do Sul moved-up to seventh place. Loser UNIFACISA dropped to the thirteenth position with three games lost. Caxias do Sul will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. UNIFACISA will play against Mogi (#6) in Mogi das Cruzes and hope to secure a win.
