Mexico closes day one with win over Guatemala

Mexico closed day one of the 2009 Centrobasket U17 Championship after winning over Guatemala by the score of 81-58.

The first minutes were close but an 8-0 run gave the Mexicans a 20-12 lead with 1:39 left after a basket by Alan Martnez. The first quarter finished 25-17 in favor of the hosts.

Guatemala closed the game to six points (30-24) but the Mexicans recuperated to dominate at halftime 45-30. Alan Llamas Martinez had 12 points and Javier Trinidad 9 for the hosts. Freddy Fernandez had 12 points and Juan Calderon 10 for Guatemala.

Mexico kept their dominance during the second half to get the win. The big difference came in the points off turnovers where Mexico made 19 and Guatemala 2.

Jorge Alejandro Corral scored 18 points and Alan Llamas Martinez 15 for Mexico. Freddy Fernandez scored 16 in a losing effort.
